Big screen and small children

I saw a nice 50" DLP on sale at Best Buy this past weekend and finally took the HDTV plunge Now the dillema comes in, there are two small children in my home and my wife is very concerned about our two year old son and thinks that he'll spend every waking moment screwing around with the TV and eventually it will fall over and crush him or just break. Does anyone know of anyway that i can secure the TV to the wall (It's a DLP and can't be wall mounted) and ensure that it doesn't fall over?

It should have came with a strap that you screw into the wall and onto the TV. My 32" LCD came with one. If not, I am sure you can buy one

I'n not sure if DLP manufacturers use tethers, but you could easily make one... Couple of screws and a leather strap.

I'd be more worried about flat screen TVs that sit on a pedestal. I'm thinking about screwing mine down.

I have a 61" DLP on a small stand and my two year old knows that if she gets near it, she's gonna get yelled at. She doesn't mess with it any more. I was more concerned with fingerprints as there is no way in hell she could pull that 180lbs on top of herself.

In my bedroom, I just installed an audio pier which is pretty tall and narrow. I put the cable box, DVD player and PS3 on it. It came with a screw to mount into wall which I definitely did. It is now secure and stable.

BTW, DLP's tend to be bottom heavy and not top heavy which definitely helps.

I've got a 46" DLP that I've bumped before and people have leaned on it, and it doesn't budge. I imagine a 50" probably weighs 80 lbs with most of the weight anchored, you should be fine. And the screen (Samsung) seems relatively impervious to scratches--that would be my #1 concern with the kidlets.

I dont know about tipping over, but my 1 and a half year old nephew took a flashlight to my step dads 42" Samsung HD. It was only a year old.

I've got a 2 yr old...she knows not to touch the 60 incher on the stand in the MBR. She does bring me the remote when I ask though!!! Seriously, it's been said...these things don't just tip over. That, along with good parenting, should nearly assure you that you won't have any issues.

Good luck and enjoy!!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think that i'll go with the strap option, it should be relatively easy to make and secure to the wall. So far my son hasn't shown much interest in the TV but i'm sure he'll QC it sometime soon.
