Best RPTV right now
Best RPTV right now
Hey all,
I'm looking for a new RPTV (roughly 60 inches), so far the best one I've found is the 60 inch Sony A3000, but it's been discontinued and almost impossible to find.
So I see that Samsung came out with two new RPTVs for 2008...Samsung A750 (LED, 120 hz, DC4) and a650 basically same thing except a bulb instead of an LED.
I have a couple of questions...
1. Should I wait for prices to drop any further?
2. Which is better? Any significant shortcomings in either?
3. So far the a3000 has 10-bit/x.v color and i'm not sure if the samsung a750 does or not. But LED is nice...although sony has better reliability
4. I really need the size and don't want to spend more than 2k (even though the a750 is pushing it a little bit)
5. Any other suggestions/testimonials?
6. I'm also doing a home theater in a 25/25 foot dedicated room so far debating between 106' screen and a 1080p (like mitsi 1300) or a light cannon like (panasonic ax200u) So not really looking for that as an alternative.
And I don't know about you guys...but lately I've noticed doing research for tech products is almost 80% of the fun. I mean it's nice ultimately having the product and all but the process of buying is better than the bought. if that makes sense...

I have a JVC FN series that I got a year and a half ago and love it. When I looked for my father in December, it was still available from a few websites.
The problem that you're going to have is that many of the companies have stopped making RPTV.
Finally, I'd stay away from LCD RPTV. My parents ended up getting a Sony LCD RPTV and it is fine, but not nearly as nice as my JVC or even our 4 yr old plasma. I'd look hard at LCoS from JVC or Sony.

The sony best/last sony SXRD is the a3000... I'm still confused. Samsung LED or discontinued sony a3000.

How about one more tidbit....I first brought home a 56 inch JVC FN97 and kept thinking that I was missing something with Sony. So I returned the JVC and brought home the Sony (it may even have been the A3000). Guess what....only kept the Sony for 3 days and went back and got a 61 inch JVC FN97. Both my wife and father both immediately asked me why the heck I took back the JVC b/c the Sony looked noticeably worse. YMMV but I love my JVC and I'm not the only one
As for Samsung, I actually don't think much of their stuff, especially the LED. I don't know anybody who actually has a Samsung, but I do know that some folks here think highly of it. It has never looked that good to me in stores, but you know how that goes. Stores are notorious for being terrible to judge a picture in.
LED was hot last year and seems to have died off. Another of those technologies that never took off...

RPTV's?? what is this? 2003? sorry dude, RPTVs are dog piss jones now.
considering how far prices have fallen for plasmas and LCDs and how far technology has come you no longer have an excuse not to go with a flat panel.

You can go ahead and watch your 37 inch TV that cost 2500 dollars and convince yourself that it's better than a 60 inch RPTV of the same price.
And, if LCDs WERE the same price as RPTVs (they're not) then I would get a 60 inch LCD
I mean come on, for christ's sake...we're on a fckin Acura forum here. Why didn't we just buy the euro car or a lexus...cuz of BANG for the motha fckin BUCK!
So anyone have anything constructive to add...or find me a better picture for 2 grand (not a projector)

Agreed...
I have a 50 inch Panny plasma that I paid almost 6K for almost 4 years ago. The 61 inch JVC was a quarter of that just over a year ago. Both deliver excellent pictures and I'd be hard pressed to choose one of the other. It is well known that RPTV deliver the best bang for the buck in terms of screen size/money, but the downside is the footprint of RPTV. I'd have gotten a larger RPTV instead of the plasma for half the cost but it would not work in our great room. I needed the plasma to hang over the fireplace and paid dearly for that aesthetic "look". No such worries in the MBR and we were able to get the 61 incher up there easily since it is tucked in the corner of a huge room (15x21)
