What type of matress do you prefer?

2 things concern me, getting a good nights sleep and keeping myback healthy.

Now on that second point, I have heard conflicting info from different people. Some say the plush mattress is better on your back, others say the firm matress is.

A memory foam mattress was the best purchase I ever made in my life. Not sure which of those categories it falls into...

If I was buying a conventional mattress, I would definitely get very firm. I had a super plush mattress once, it was terrible. My back hurt every morning.

The memory foam matresses are definately on the firm side of the scale.

Personally Id be more concerned with the damages from lack of sleep than damage to your back

I picked the one that was the most comfortable and allowed me to sleep throughout the night without waking up. For me, softer is better, although I seem to have no problem sleeping on both.

Firm, with a soft down mattress pad. We both hate the memory foam stuff, so this is the best thing for our backs and our sleep.

We have a pillow-top matress which definitely falls to the plush side of things. We've had it for 3 years and neither of us have ever had any problems. Even after a hard day of working around the yard, playing golf, etc. very rarely do I wake up hurting the next morning...

It's also so damn comfortable.

My matress is way too hard which sucks. I'm definitely getting a softer bed when I move.

Well, you can have a pillowtop on a firm mattress (i.e firm springs). Perhaps the best of both worlds.

^ True. Ours isn't that firm though. It feels like a pillowtop on a pillowtop matress... but we LOVE it

Firm.

The furniture company delivered a pillowtop mattress by mistake. I tried to just deal with it, but it was too soft for my back. I had to sleep on the couch untiil they switched it for a firm mattress.

We stayed at a friends house in Dana Point this weekend. Their guestroom had a bed with a plush, soft, matress and I woke up with a sore back. I prefer firm.

I love love love my sleep number mattress w/ the pillow top. My back gets sore when the mattress is too firm. I'm a stomach sleeper & the pillow top seems to help keep my boobs from arching my back too much. Good stuff. Seriously, some of the best money I've ever spent.

Ours is firm with a thin layer of memory foam on the top. Best mattress I have ever slept on.

Got a new mattress a while ago (for the first time). Since I was used to the only one I'd ever slept on regularly, I thought I'd do well with another firmer mattress. I didn't get the firmest available, but more on the 'firm' end of the spectrum....it felt great in the store. Got it home and didn't sleep well on it at all - I was up a lot throughout the night, each night, and it didn't contour my body at all (hurt my hip bones when I slept on my side). I decided to give it an honest try for a week or so, but eventually decided it wasn't the one for me. I was able to exchange it for a mattress on the complete opposite end --- a soft mattress with pillow top (again, not the softest, but A LOT softer and more plush than my original choice). This one's been nice and forms well to my body!

I'd go to a place like Sleep Country or any other mattress shop and test a few out in the store. You really have no idea which one you like til you try them all out. Some were easily ruled out, and then I could focus on the few that I really liked the feel of. The good thing about some mattress stores is that they allow you to do one free exchange if you're unhappy with the one you chose.

I bought a sleep comfort pillow top bed about a year ago, it can be adjusted for firmness of varying degrees on both sides of the bed. My wife sets it at 100 and mine is at 80. I never realized how important a quality mattress can be until I got one - worth every penny.

So I went with a firm, pocket coil mattress, ... but with a silk pillow top. IMO its just about perfect. It soft and plush for a couple of inchess, but the spring support is there in spades for my back.

I really don't know the answer to this... we have a firm mattress with a down mattress pad (not a pillowtop) and our backs were hurting, so we took the mattress pad off, and the mattress was too firm so our backs hurt worse, so we put the pad back on and our backs still hurt.

And it's a really good mattress, relatively new. I don't know what to do.

For me it's between the shoulder blades, for him it's the lower back.

Well, from what I understand, I think a more plush mattress would be better for upper back pain. And when I say plush, i just dont mean a pillow top. I mean the actual springs give more. Do you ever sleep on your stomach? If so your breasts might be causing problems for you and theplushness wil help there as well.

But in general, I think the stiffer matresses are better for lower back pain because of the added support, but for upper back pain a more plush matress might work better. This would explain why your back hurts, but not why Scotts does.

Anyways, that just my from what I have gathered from reading and talking to people. I could be way off

hmm.. the mattress i have at home, while somewhat old is a beauty rest mattress, anyways that thing makes my back hurt like a mofo everytime i sleep on it and i wake up tired all the time.

Back at my old apartment for the past school year i was sleeping on the couch, no good for my back, and then sleeping on my old roommates POS futon was even worse for my back.

When i moved into that old apartment 2 years ago i bought a new twin mattress + box for about 350 dollars (probably too much huh?), it was a little too firm for me so my back was aching a little, so then i bought a pretty thick mattress pad, helped a tiny bit, but not really. So then i saw one of those memory foam mattress pads on sale at costco (i think it was 1.5inches to 2), so i picked up one of those, man that was a great purchase. Everytime i slept on that i would wake up w/ no pain and lots of energy.

although lately thats not the case, i think my back probably got fuxored from sleeping on the couch and that POS futon the past year

hopefully my back will recover cause in my new place ill be sleeping on that bed w/ the memory foam mattres pads all the time.

i have a question thou, how good are those i guess japanese style mattresses that are like as stiff as a board for your back? Because my old roommate has one of those and i dont get how anyone can sleep on those. way too stiff for me, its like sleeping on the floor.

Just bought a mattress yesterday - Sealy Posturepedic. According to the sleep tech at Jordan's, it's "in the middle, but leans toward the plush side." It was the most comfortable one for us after trying out 10 different ones across the firm -> plush spectrum.

I'm a stomach sleeper, she mentioned that plush is better for that sleep style.
