What is infesting my lawn?

Wow this stuff is crazy. Started in a back corner earlier this spring and now it's growing all through my lawn. WTF is it?

Marijuana. I'm sure of it.

That, and I'm calling the police.

pretty cool and works 95% of the time.
when it doesn't work, it gives a related queue of pictures/results of what it could be.

Thanks jstn. Tried Google Lens and it thinks it's Japanese stiltgrass. Wow it's nasty stuff.
Reading up in how to control with a post-emergent herbicide.

the Stiltgrass looks exactly like how the chinese water spinach spreads and takes over the lawn.

same sort of problem as bamboo... you fucked. They're grasses so you just have to keep yanking it... if you try chemical, you'll kill the lawn as well. Good luck to you.

I would nuke with roundup and reseed in the fall. Best practice is roundup, rake out when dead. Repeat roundup/rake until all gone. I got rid of Zoysia grass with that method.

Agreed, fire.

Seriously though, areas you can spray roundup, go for it. If there are areas where it's intermingled with the lawn grass, you can take a small container of mixed roundup (same stuff you would spray) and using a little foam paintbrush, just paint a little on the leaves as you see them in the lawn. You only need to hit one leaf per plant (it's systemic) , so don't worry too much about how many leaves there are... Lather, rinse and repeat every two weeks until they are all dead.

Been doing some research on this bugger.
Looks like #1 is to remove the plants before they flower and release seeds in Fall.
I am also looking into this to kill it. Research says it's safe on grass.

Since it drops seed every year, don't forget pre-emergent in the spring or it will be back.

Ordered these last night. Was out in the yard yanking it out of the grass. It comes out really easy but JHC it's everywhere. Ran my electric thatcher over an area and it seems to pull most of it out so may do that before applying this.

Also ordered a surfactant (basically glue to help the herbicide stick to the weeds) and a blue dye to mark where I've sprayed. Should make for a fun weekend .

depending on where you are, they have weed killers at the home improvement stores that can work wonders! I have St. Augustine (pretty much a weed) and used some $10 weed killler (safe for southern lawns including St. Augustine) and it killed everything non-grass within a week. I believe it was from orthomax

Thanks yeah I looked but nothing for Stiltgrass. That and the idiots at HD and Lowe's have no clue about anything. Brought samples with me and asked them what they thought. Lots of blank stares

You know you could have avoided all of this simply by a better neighborhood.

Ran the electric thatching rake over the area a couple of times and it pulled all of the JS out.
Went back and sprayed the herbicide and the hope is it doesn't come back .

FWIW, you can also just use dish soap as a surfactant...
