Water Pressure regulator

I had a plumber out to fix something with the water heater and he noticed the water pressure was high so he pressure tested it and it came back at 100 psi! He said that my water pressure regulator was probably bad and would cost $450 for a new unit and another $100 for labor.

I did a quick Google and have been finding pressure regulators for a 1" main for about $50 all day. Is my plumber trying to give me the shaft or am I looking at the wrong items online?

I have a different plumber (background checked through tofixit.com) coming out this weekend to give me a free check.

Anyone dealt with this before?

Deal with what? A plumber trying to over charge you for something?

He should buy the part and install it for a reasonable price of $250 tops. You can get a decent WPV for under $75.

I figured he was f'n with me. I mean come on, 6x times the retail price is a but extreme even for a plumber's markup. I'll see what this other company says this weekend

Yeah, my water pressure like 30 or 40. I can't adjust to make it higher. Water Company said that the norm. Remember the Seinfeld episode, but not as bad.

100psi sounds great until you start blowing valves in your house causing a massive flood
