Toilets... A very important topic.

I need to replace a toilet. I can get rebates of up to $90 if I purchase a water efficient dual-flush toilet.

My challenge is finding one that actually flushes. My previous experience with 1.3gpf (or less) toilets involves a whole lot of extra flushes and nasty skid marks on the bowl.

Any advice out there? Any models you find really good.

I am looking for function here. Styling is not a big deal... It needs to be white and if possible have an elongated bowl - I am hung like a horse. Not really I just like the extra room.

Power flush. Small water, big flow, erodes skidmarks quickly.

We have both the elongated and round bowls in my house and the round bowl tends to be slightly more efficient.

Edit -
I found these forums a while back and there is a lot of good info + good advice:

Here's a toilet report (updated July, 2009):

I forgot what model. I was being lazy and didn't feel like checking on the model. I guess I can go look now. I think we got them from our local hardware store

edit - Ok all it says is 1.6gpf. I'm guessing all Toto's pretty much work the same. I've never had any problems with this one

edit again - that is a really cool forum. thanks, it will help with the rest of the plumbing that i have to do

Toto FTW! I used this Toto model in the ANA lounge at Narita and it was the sh-t (pun intended). Srsly, heated seat and warm water washlet after I was done. I felt like a king on a throne. I looked into procuring one for my master bathroom but unfortunately I don't have an adjacent electrical outlet I even spoke with an electrician about running an electrical conduit from outside the home, over the bathtub, to the toilet so I could run this Toto, that's how much I <3 this toilet. There's different washlets to fit your budget and with the economy how it is, I was pricing out several hundred dollar discounts depending on the model at the local Toto store. Your other option is pricing on line which may be cheaper.

If you have an elongated toilet, you may use the existing base and just purchase the seat and washlet ala carte.

I was pretty picky about what I wanted in the bathroom. I hold the line at Toto.

water saving toilets are a waste of money. I have done many jobs with Toto and American Standard. Both are quality toilets.

HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in Japan a few months ago for two weeks and I loveddddddddddddddd the toilets there.

I was able to experience the "washlet s400" with the auto up/down lid and different variances of flushing for *aheM* different loads in the toilet....hehe.
I'm lucky enough to be able to recognize "small" and "big" in chinese so obviously I knew which one to choose every time.

But yea, Toto is awesome.

I'm pretty sure all new toilets are now water saving toilets - 1.6 GPF or less. Some use less and some are better than others.

I have new toilets: American Standard compact elongated and a Kohler standard and both have been excellent. I just went to Lowe's and later Home Depot and went with the toilets with the greatest flushing power (gravity type). I don't think either one was over $250. They are 1.6 gpf, I really don't think any less than that would work all that great. The dual flush toilets did not review well with Consumer Reports.

Salesperson was trying to sell me on the 1.28 gpf. Fuck that, 1.6 isn't much and I really have a hard time seeing how it works as well with that much less

I just bought 2 toilets, each a little different. Both elongated class 5 flushers. Even though they use less water these babies take the logs and the moist flushable cotteneles with ease!!

Most importantly, get the senior citizen ones, the high 18 inch off the ground ones. Man they are nice, great on the knees! Also, less splash with the drunken pissing, and less airspace to cover when you have the whole jim carey after sex pee episode going on..... on the #2 business

I just ordered two Tota Aquia III's for my new place (elongated, comfort height). They are Toto's dual flush toilet, and from what I could find, the best of the dual flush. The good thing about the dual flush is that you can use the smaller flush for #1 and not have to worry about "letting it be".

While I have obviously not had any personal experience with them yet, they did come highly recommended.

Money is a little tight and I needed to get a toilet quick. I bought a cheapo model (Pegasus) on the thought that I will retire it to the basement bath at some point in the future. Overall I am impressed even though it is ghetto cheap. It is a dual flush that is nice and quiet. When I remodel the bathroom I will spend the money on a good one and put the cheap one in the basement. In the meantime it is nice to have a toilet that doesnt run on and on all night.

Thanks for the pointers all..

I have four toilets -- two Kohlers the builder installed and two Gerber Ultra Flush power assist toilets (top-rated on terrylove.com).

I am about to add a third Gerber.

American Standerd makes a 16 1/2" seat height , elongated bowl and I belive has 1.6GPF. Its the Champion 4 model. Also, comes in white. WE just installed one in a customers house yesterday. It was around $230 with everything needed excpet a flex fit line from the valve to the toilet. The old line the customer had was only an 8" line, so we upgraded it to a 20" line.
