Angry Termites

So it looks like my house is becoming aTermite buffet. So I did some searching and notice that there are some products I can buy to kill these little fuckers. I want to try to fix the problem myself first before I have to call out a termite specialist.

So has anyone tried any of the store bought termite pesticides? Which one works the best and which one are bogus.

Termidor is the ONLY thing you want to use.

Let me also say, to do it right, you will need to create a perimeter around the entire outside of the house, and pillars (crawl), and basement expansion joints with Termidor to correctly do this. You will also need to foam the walls 10 ft. in each direction of the activity.

IF you want to do it right.

Basically, start shopping company's.

Unless you can get your hands on some Chloradane, which was outlawed in 1986-ish.

get a professional, call up your insurance company. Termites are some rotten beasts, how long have you had them for?

This is all assuming you have subterranean termites. The ones moving from the soil into your home via mud tunnels. Look for the mud tunnels around your foundation, inside and out.

If you have Formosan termites, that's a whole new ballgame. You would find these guys up in an attic or the like. If this is the case, your house will need to be tinted and fumigated.

Since it is spring, am I to assume you discovered these little guys by a swarm happening in your home????

If there was a swarm, you need to act quickly. Those little buggers aren't fuckin around.

Get a couple of termite companies to do estimates for you-- the inspections should be free and tell you the extent of the problems

Then call the insurance company about the little accidental fire that burned down the house?

its that season...we have them in my parents house too, we always get them this time of year. Mom doesnt want the house fumigated because of fear of the pesticides. House has been around since the 30's so if thats what they want

even if my parents did get the house fumigated, theyd have to go back and do it next year too

Burn your house down... that'll teach 'em. j/k

All of the pro termite stuff is expensive, but nothing at Lowes or Home Depot will help. If you only been in your house a few years, most states require inspections at closing. You may have some bones to pick with the realtor or insurance agent.

not good.

when's the last time they got an estimate? Treatments have come a long way. They should only have to treat once. If its done properly.

Those little buggers are literally eating equity right out of that place.

i agree, my father owns his own exterminating company. i usually go with him on saturday and sundays when his helper cant go with him to do Termite jobs. im not sure about where you are at, but here on the east coast we usually pump around 55-100 gallons of chemical into the ground creating a perimeter around the house. Unless you can tell where the nest is. if its the Formosa termites then you are looking at a significant jump in price. good luck.

Here in Florida we have drywood termits which fly into the house. Just a good idea to have your house tented about every 8-10 years. The Termador and other treatments just dont work here.

I'm not sure statistically they last. They are more like a total kill, but my fathers company gives 2 year waranties whereas some only give 1. Whoever u get make sure to shop how long their warranties are.

HUD has a list of states that termites frequent. OP is from California which is on the list. Termite inspection should be required on all property transfers (sales).

Problem as I understand it; you can have property treated today, next week you can get new termites. Guarantee just says they will treat it again for a certain # of years. Also, I think the more effective chemicals are regulated and can only be obtained by professionals.
