Spacer size for tile?

Is there a general rule of thumb on the size of the spacing for tile? I kinda like small lines, so I went with a 1/8" spacer.... I think before we had 1/4" Just a matter of preference? Just curious.....

I think its personal preference. I suppose the size of the tile will make a difference in decision too.

Agreed on the personal pref. You can go as small as 1/16th if you want.

Just went 1/4 inch in my bathroom basement, big mistake. 1/8 should be fine.

why a big mistake? you dont like the look? I personally dont mind the look of a wide grout, as long as its the right tile and the right color grout.

Ya, the look. I actually picked the perfect color grout for the tile. Tiles are 13"s and the 1/8 grout I have on the 13" tiles upstairs look alot better. IMO.

Personal preference, within reason. I personally wouldn't put 1/16" between 24" tiles, or 1/4" between 6" tiles (except maybe saltillo), but most combos in between are mostly a matter of personal asthetics. Just remember the wider grout lines will show stain more readily if they're a light color, and will crack more easily, especially if not properly mixed. We went with 3/16" between our 18" tiles in the kitchen, and I'm really happy with the look. I think 1/4" either direction would have looked fine though.

On the backsplash, we used 1/8" between 6" tiles.

When I was working in tile we would almost always do 1/8", no matter what size tile.

Just seemed like what everyone wanted
