roomba vacuum

2) Never timed it in a specific room or area, but our first floor is about 2400-2500 square feet and it cleans the whole thing on one charge... so say 2.5 hours or so.
3) It is quieter then a regular vacuum. On hardwoods it makes some noise as the wheels move around the wood (from plank to plank, etc), but on carpet/area rugs, it's pretty quiet.

We did use the virtual walls like my post said. It will catch itself when it senses a ledge and usually back up. There were times when it didn't. I'm not bashing the product, just saying unless you specifically block it from stairs you'll run the risk of having it fall.

I've had mine for a year now and it still works great. As others have mentioned, it pretty much needs to be used for regular maintenance rather than for heavier cleaning. Does a great job on both hardwood and carpet. After a year the only I don't really care for is that it's a little loud. And sometimes I spend a little too much time watching it work. Other than that I would recommend it.

with mine when it gets to the edge of the stairs, it detects it after its like 1/3 over and reverses back. But I do have carpet and i think it helps grip better ,i never had it fall down

Although I shouldn't laugh... I probably would have said the same thing when I was 18 since I did not have my own house to maintain back then. Plus, how can you have it only a day when it takes something like 12-14 hours to charge it the first time?
It's definitely not a gimmick. If it was, it would have never won the awards it did which includes awards from the scientific community (and not just house/home magazine awards).
If you bought it thinking that you will never need to use a regular vacuum again, then that would be your own fault. The Roomba will never give you a deep cleaning. What it does give you is a great automatic vacuum to KEEP the house clean... but once in a while you still need to give your floors a good cleaning via traditional methods. It is meant to be a compliment to your standard vacuum, not a replacement for it.
We only use ours on our hardwood since we really don't need it upstairs (we hardly use the second floor except for my office, so it rarely gets dirty) and I can honestly say that since we've had it I only needed to use a regular vacuum a few times. We used to spend about 1.5 hours or so per week/week and a half vacuuming. Since we bought the Roomba, I've probably only spent 1.5 hours vacuuming in total.

We bought the machine about 2 years ago when they first hit the market. Perhaps they have improved them over the years but I for one would never buy another one again. To each his own I suppose.
^ yeah, that's odd. We bought ours last year... not sure if it's been updated since you got it. But we have thick plush carpet in our bedroom (so I guess I shouldn't have said only hardwoods, b/c we it goes in there as well when it runs on the first floor) and it does a fine job in there as well. We also have a rather thick area rug in the Great room, plus a runner and area rug in the kitchen... no problems there either.
So maybe they did upgrade it. Not sure. We don't have any pets either... so we are just cleaning up after ourselves or our guests... but people I know with animals have said it picks up the hair no problem.

In the amount of time it would take to clean the floor, it did not satisfy my parents. It only had a very limited section where dirt and dust particles were to be collected and would fill up quickly with the dog fur. We also tried several times to get the boundaries set up and each time we thought it was programmed properly, the machine would smash into the woodwork. Needless to say, it was a gimmick in our eyes.

I think I'm going to get one. We are tiling most of the house, and will have an area rug in the LR and Hall. I'm looking for one of those BBB coupons right now. I'll post and let everyone know of my experience!

Seriously... Do these things work as advertised? It just reads and sounds like a complete gimmick.

I hear that they are fantastic...while at the same time I hear they are a gimmick and they are a waste.
Not getting a decent review I can believe in is the only thing that has held me back from getting one.
It really works well especially the the scooba. It really cleans ceramic tile and marble well. The roomba like others have said does not clean like an upright vacuum, but if used daily is fine especially on a low cut pile carpet like berber.
Welp... We have a mix of ceramic and twist carpet throughout and will soon be moving to hardwood on the first floor.
I'd just be really pissed to buy something that doesn't work on carpet.

Just chiming in again for those on the fence. We still use ours 1-2 times a week and it works great for us!! Granted for us we use it on hardwoods 98% of the time, but the few times it's wandered on the carpets it's done fine. It has been a HUGE help since we opened the store(s) since we do not have time to vacuum this place weekly.
Running this thing at least once per week has kept the house clean which is great and it has saved us a ton of time (that we don't have).... making things easier for us.

My fiance and I have one in our condo and it worked well. Unfortunately, we don't use it that much anymore and has just been sitting there in its docking station.
For the time that we did use it, it was great! It worked really well and got around everything (besides some wires).
I would recommend the product.
