roomba vacuum

does anyone own one of these? or know anyone that does?

http://store.irobot.com/product/inde...ductId=2172861 - scooba robot

http://store.irobot.com/family/index...930&cp=2174940 - roomba

i think the scooba (floor washing one) is pretty cool but i dunno about the roomba...don't see how it can be powerful enough to do a half decent job on carpet...

I have been using one for over a year now. We use it on hardwood, marble and carpet. It does an excellent job. I usually do it at night when everybody are asleep. Just turn it on and walk away. One bad thing is sometimes it gets stuck on something, but no biggie.

i dont have one, but i know a few people that do... and they work real well. the idea is if you have one of these, you can have it automatically vacuum daily or even more frequently... preventing the need for a "deep clean" that you might get from a Dyson or something.

preventative maintenance.

i want to get the Scooba.

Bought my wife one 2 years ago for christmas. We "tested" it in the living room. It did a great job cleaning stuff on the surface of the carpet in that room.. then proceeded to travel across the front foyer and dump everything it had picked up in the living room all over the dining room floor!!

I tried it again and it kept picking shit up in one room and dumping it in another room (kind of like a dog burying a bone). I packed that POS up and got my $$ back.

We used our old vac. for another 9 months or so, then I bought her a Dyson instead. Works great! It's almost scary how much embedded crap the Dyson picked out of the carpet that the old vac never got to.

The only good thing I can say about the Roomba is it kept us very entertained when the cats were around!

I'd suggest getting a real vacuum.

true storry i have the roomba and if used daily it leaves the floor spotless, and it picks up reallll good on carpet too, i love how u can just leave it on and it goes back to the charger when the battery is low, im waitin to get a scooba, anyone have one by any chance?

also i heard the roomba is better on carpet than regular vacuum cleaners...it does go over the same area 3 times in its cycle, and my carpet does keep lookin cleaner? i guess not deep cleanin though

I just got done moving some furniture out of my bedroom, realized how much dust and dog hair and crap collects under the dresser where vaccuums don't reach. Just ordered a Roomba.

Roomba is awesome!!

I've always wanted one, and the wifey finally agreed to let me get one a few months ago. For me to vacuum this house would take almost 2.5 hours. So I got the Roomba and I run it once a week on the first floor (all hardwood except for the Master) and that's that. I haven't had to use my vacuum since we bought it!! And since the only room I use upstairs is the office (and bonus room to workout, but it stays clean), the only room I need to vacuum is the office.. so my vacuuming time went from 2.5 hours to about 10 minutes!!

We also got a good deal on it. $279.99 from Linens N Things, used a 20% off coupon, plus got a $50 gift card... so it was a win/win. Run it once a week, floors are spotless, and saves me a lot of time!

FWIW, I've read that the Scooba doesn't do that great of a job scrubbing the floors (Consumer Reports said to just use a mop)... however, I do not have any personal experience with it.

Still run it about once per week (sometimes once every two weeks) and it's still running great and does a great job.

It can get kind of loud, especially on hardwoods... but it's a tad quieter then a regular vacuum. What I've been doing lately is just running it when I leave the house to run errands, and it's typically either done, or almost done by the time I get back. So even if I am home when it's running, it's not on long. There have also been times when I was home the entire cycle, and after a while I just ignored it.

If you have small rooms with a lot of stuff on the floor does it still work? The ads I've seen have big wide open rooms.

^ Not sure. We have big wide open rooms.... so it works great for us. The whole first floor is a nice wide-open plan, so it cleans the whole floor relatively easily. It runs for its whole charge, then returns to the charger itself when it is done.

If you have a lot of stuff on the floor it will simply bounce off of everything while cleaning... so I don't see why it wouldn't still work...

We have a bunch of area rugs and dog bones, and those doorway dividers so it can get caught up. However, it did work well, especially on dog hair, and maybe we will start using it again. It definatly is more than just a gimmick if you have the right floor plan.

I actually have a pic of it:

If I have an area rug on top of berber carpet, will it go over the area rug?

It should. We have several area rugs ourselves. One in the great room and one in the kitchen... as well as a runner also in the kitchen and it gets all of them... so I don't see why going from berber to area rug would be much different. It has the ability to get onto different surfaces and does so relatively easily.

Do I understand this correctly? Turned loose on it own, it will clean a whole house going through doorways from room to room and cleaning both hard and carpeted floors on a single level, returning to a charger to charge itself as needed?

That is correct!

I love this thing and since I got it I have only used our regular vacuum a handful of times. Otherwise, what I do is use the remote to spot clean certain areas myself... then just set it loose using one of the modes and it just goes around the entire 1st floor itself, then returns to the charger when the battery is dead.

It even comes with "walls" to keep it out of areas. You put batteries in them, and set them wherever you do NOT want the Roomba to go (say where a kid is playing or near stairs).... and when the Roomba hits the beam from it, it just turns around. The one we bought (Discovery) came with one at the time (not sure now), but you can add as many as you want by purchasing additional ones separately.

We use ours sometimes. It was neat when new - novelty of it wore off. I do like how you can control where it cleans with the little sensors provided. We only had it fall down the stairs once or twice.

It won't just avoid stairs on its own... you need to setup the Virtual Wall(s) like I mentioned above. If you do that it will not fall down any stairs...

I've been thinking about this one too! I 2nd the question about corners. Also, when it bounces off of things, does it SMASH into them?

Couple of questions:

Does it really clean that well?
How long does it take to clean for example a 20'x20' room?
Is it really noisy?

Hey, you come clean/vacuum my entire house, then tell me I'm lazy.

This thing cuts my vacuuming time in half b/c I just run it on the first floor and let it go... then I vacuum the upstairs myself.

As for corners, it does a good job. It has little brushes that extend out and spin to get corners and along wall bases.

1) I think so. I use the remote to spot clean really bad spots where I can see it needs more attention. I usually do that for 5 minutes or so. Once that's done I just let it run the program and I've never been unhappy with the job it did.

2) Never timed it in a specific room or area, but our first floor is about 2400-2500 square feet and it cleans the whole thing on one charge... so say 2.5 hours or so.

3) It is quieter then a regular vacuum. On hardwoods it makes some noise as the wheels move around the wood (from plank to plank, etc), but on carpet/area rugs, it's pretty quiet.

I think this must be one of those have to see it to believe it type things.

I just can't believe that a glorified dust buster can do a good job vacuuming my house.

Does really good on the pet hair. Especially with the hardwood and tile floors.
