Red button under water heater access panel

What is it for? The water heater in the house I just bought has been acting up - it was off the other day and I noticed the red button was "out" so I pressed it in and it seemed to turn the water heater on and the next day the water was coming out ot, but today the water was room temp and the button was out again. I'm having the home warranty company out to check on it this weekend - is there anything I should be worried about?

its a reset button. My old water heater used to pop the button too. It pops when the waters gets hotter than what the limits of the tank are and the tanks shouts itself off. Thats what the warrenty guy said onmy old one. I just got pissed after having to reset it after every shower so I just got a new one. A few months later i come to find that it was a thermostat or somehting inside that was faulty.
