Quick plumbing question - faucet install

I'm installing new bathroom faucets on new counters - both are 8" centers (widespread handles). The installation instructions list all the necessary tools, but don't really give much detail on the installation method. I have no problem getting the pieces together, but they list needing plumbers putty without saying where/when to use it.

My approach is to put a little at the base of each handle base of the spout and where the drain connects to the sink. This may end up being slightly overkill, but it sounds about right to me. Anywhere else I should be using this or where I shouldn't be?

The faucet probably has a gasket of some type were it meets the sink. If it doesn't use the putty there. I would also use some on the drain were it meets the sink.

should be a gasket for the handle portion, the putty should go where the drain meets the sink to seal it.

I've stopped using plumbers putty. It tends to crack and look nasty. I use clear silicone. My Dad's friend is a plumber and that's what he recommends too.

Also, plumbers putty tends to discolor marble sinks.

1) Teflon tape around the hot & cold connections
2) Clear silicone around the drain mechanism

That is all you need.
