It seems very very popular nowadays so I wouldn't hesitate to use it!
I hate stepping on drains almost as much as I like stepping on spiders, so having the drain in the middle of a shower stall is awful for me... Plus, replacing a tub means the drain hole is probably at the end of the space, not the middle.
