Making a custom headboard

Well instead of purchasing one, we decided to make our own headboard

Just some 2x4's, plywood and some moldings. Today I finally got the moldings on and got them stained:

Cut out the moldings

Sorry for the crappy phone pics, camera was charging.

Here it is after staining. I just need to staple the material in the back and make it tight and put some foam on the back so that it doesn't scratch up the wall and attach it to the bed!

We didn't really have to stain the bottom molding but decided to do it anyways. All of that will be covered up by the mattress.

Nice! What was the cash outlay vs. buying?

Well 2x4's and the plywood was laying around in the garage so I won't count that. $31 for moldings and stain, roughly $30 for material used and let's say $5-6 worth of bolts/nails. Foam was $50.

I'd say $120 max...

Not bad. And you can always re-upholster it if, say, leopard-skin prints come back in style.

I don't know why you bothered padding it. Does it really matter if her head hurts after you're done?

Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping to finish it up tonight (ended up being a busy week with this nice weather we've been having) and will hopefully bolt it to the bed frame.

Good idea...not a fan of the fabric, but think it's so creative that you thought to do this. My cousins did the same, making 5 headboards for all of the rooms in their house and it really gave each bedroom a custom touch!

The fabric had nothing to do with me I just had to cut, nail and glue stuff

It's the same fabric that our curtains are made of so I think it'll all come together once in the room.

Very nice, very nice indeed! I may have to attempt something like that myself.

Thank you for the comments.

It's really changed the room. I'm going to be painting that A/C unit white in the next week or so.

The bed has really become sturdy with the addition of the headboard

When you mounted it to the frame, did you drill the posts first before assembly? We need a head board and I never thought about making my own. You definitely inspired me, but I wonder about getting it on the frame right.
