I am such a dummy...

I hooked up my watersoftener backwards...

I couldn't figure out why I was getting "sediment" in my water. The sediment was the resin beads. I hope my "extended backwash" cycle didn't flush too much of the resin out. I ran maybe 30-40 gallons through before I figured it out.

I dont think it would cause any other damage, than filling the water system with resin beads. I have flushed them out of all the faucet aerators in the pipes.

Water scares me more than electric. Once you lose control of the flow of water in your house, you can have big $ damage in a hurry.

Sears put theirs on sale in the fall - if you can do basic plumbing they are easy to install, just don't hook it up backwards...

I am kicking my ass 10 ways to sunday...

how much did you pay JL? I just got a house and the water is relatively hard, I'm considering getting a softener also.

Other than hooking it up backwards, was it hard to install, how long did it take?

It was $950 for the Ultrasoft 800. Regular price is $1400 - it is a big unit - a little bigger than I need which means you waste more water when it regenerates. It was relatively easy to hookup, as long as you can solder copper sweat fittings. Basically it is an inlet pipe, outlet pipe and 2 drain hoses. It took me a total of 2 hrs, but I did some plumbing reorganization.
