Home Security

I just had an attempted break in and was thinking about getting a security system. There are lots of 3rd party co's advertising all sorts of systems and deals. Any advise?

I also might get a glock

There's been a lot of bad press on ADT, no matter what they say to sell you the system they're only liable for (IIRC) $500, (read the fine print). Get insurance and make sure it covers replacement of goods.

Also a dog would help, once a dog barks, they're leaving.

I have a Chubb system. The piece of mind I get when I am out of the house is well worth the monthly rate.

My roommate has a boxer, but he stays in the bedroom during the day. So, he may have scared the robber off, but if he made it in the house, the dog isnt doing anything. Plus the dog is a pushover unless he sensed some danger I guess. Fucking ridiculous people want to steal shit instead of work for it. If I catch one, I will shoot to kill.

At my moms we have two dogs, as well as an alarm. At my dads there is a handgun in every bedroom, as well as a shotgun in the master. Both have worked well so far.

We have a standard alarm guarding doors/windows, video survelience around the entire house, as well as two Dobermans. If you make it into the house, good luck because the alarm is loud enough to wake up the entire block, the Dobermans will be on your ass, and oh yeah, we have video evidence.

so do you have any cool attempted break in stories from your dads house? sounds like they would end pretty interesting.

lol.

Unfortunately no. My dad is an absolute nut-job, hence the guns and what not. I remember one time when I was younger we went to a car wash (the kind where you go inside and your car rolls through), and he pulled a revolver out of the glovebox and a pistol out of the center console before we got out. He looked over at me and said, "Oh, I've got permits for them." My dad lives in a heavily forested area, so the likelihood of someone finding his house, much less breaking into it are slim to none.

I would advise against ADT and Brinks. They suck. They hook you into like a 24 month contract.

Guns and a dog for the win!

to a shotgun and insurance, I'm sure dogs help, but I'm just not a dog person. If you upgrade your insurance make sure its for replacement cost, not actual value, otherwise everything is on a depreciation schedule and you may not get near enough to replace items. For example most insurance companies feel a couch has a 10 year life span, my couch is 11 years old and still looks/feels near new, if it were stolen and I had actual value insurance on it they would give me nothing for it. The difference for me in premium between actual value and replacement cost was under $200/ year.

Most people are not going to know if a dog is a terror or a wuss, the sound of them barking is likely going to scare them away. Most thieves and burglars are going to go for the easiest target/victim and just the thought of dealing with a dog will usually be enough to send them on their way.

This might not be intimidating enough for a hardened burglar...

And what's with the shotgun/gun ideas?? I don't think OP was at home when the attempted break-in occurred, so an entire arsenal in the house would have been useless except as a target for the burglar.

Only thoughts I had were ANY security company, a sign out front and a loud siren/alarm attached to the system. Maybe a dog if OP wants and can care for a dog.

Nootch, sorry to hear about the attempt break in. Where in Scottsdale are you? A couple of Azine-ers are in the NE Valley.

OP did mention getting a Glock. Hence the gun suggestions.

If he's thinking of getting a Glock, a shotgun is a better choice for general home defense. Only carry a handgun because of the size. A rifle or shotgun is always going to be better, meaning for around the house.

#4 buck or low recoil 00 buck is a good choice.

If just buying regular store hunting ammo, I'd get 2 3/4" instead of 3" shells. The kick is too much for a non regular shooter.

OK, I checked. ONE out five posts seem relatively relevant.
