Hardwood floor question

Guys -

For those of you that have hard wood floors - I have the option for 2 1/4" Strip in Gunstock or I can do 3" Plank in Gunstock. Both are by Bruce and either choice I will have installed diagonally. Plank is a level up from the strip.

Just curious what some of you have gone with? Thick or thin?

thanks,
TB

entire 1st floor of the house except for sunken family room - that will have carpet and laundry room will be tile. So that means LR, DR, Kitchen, foyer, back Hall, Powder Room and Study will all be hardwood.

I like the 3" wide. For such large rooms, small width planks are too busy. The grain patterns are obviously different on each piece and they tend to make the floor look very busy.

If I were you, go to a flooring store that carries the model you want. Lay a bunch of planks on the ground and look at it.

Our whole first floor is hardwood except for the Master Suite and I agree with NSX... go with the 3" boards. Imagine if our first floor (about 2600-2800 sq ft) was thin planks. It would look odd.

More great advise. We actually had the luxury of doing this at the design center. We laid about 100 square feet of hardwoods on the floor and picked out the ones we wanted. We also did this with carpet and tile....

I agree. We originally picked the 3" (I did what you said at the design center too) But my inlaws have always had the strip and while it looks nice, I recall just seeing "lines" like you said....

..I'm thinking I want the 3" look....gonna go with my first pick.

Good call. Where is the house being built?

depends on the look you are after. 3 inches seems to be common these days but 2 1/4 looks good too.

When you go with pre-finished, you will have lines in between each plank or strip either way you go. I personally prefer the larger pieces of 3" over the 2 1/4". The pre-finished Bruce is very durable and I recommend it to most of my customers. I've put down other brands and they dent and scratch alot more easily. For the best look however I prefer the un-finished and stain it a nice color.
