gym mat tiles

I want to put gym mat tiles in our exercise room. There are a ton of choices out there and am having a hard time deciding.

Right now we have new carpet and padding on top of concrete in a 12x12 room. I am not looking for high end or kids stuff. I need to put a universal and a bike on top and the wife needs to do her pilates.

Can you recommend a 3/8 or 1/2 tile that is decently inexpensive?

These aren't exactly "tiles," but but I got 4x6 horse stall mats (rubber) to use as gym flooring. I have an elliptical and hope to get a treadmill and weight system at some point. I got 4 of these and they weigh a ton, but I think they will work out well. I believe they were about $40 each at Tractor Supply Store.

that is most def heavy duty. I have seen a few that are really expensive like that. I was hoping to get the entire room done for less than $200.

Ah, I see. I just did a section of my unfinished basement. I actually would have been fine with some sort of gym floor from a sporting goods store, but my bf insisted on these mats for some reason. They do the job just fine, but I might need a couple more with the equipment I want to add later on. They are heavy as hell - we nearly broke ourselves getting them into the house.

I've got the basic interlocking rubber mats from home depot, they work just fine. It's been a few years so I don't remember the cost, but they were fairly inexpensive and have held up perfectly.

After looking for some tiles i went with www.getrung.com

3/8 inch grey 144 cuft for about $120

I could have done a better job on cutting the edges, but it worked out well.

I have learned that you do not let a vacuum left on while sitting on these and when my dog scratches them, it leaves marks. But, it will come up when we move and the carpet was steam vac'ed before i put it down.

I also put a later of plastic underneath so the moisture would not stay captured under the mats.

Nice setup! Your basement looks much brighter than mine. I would like to do something about that. The only saving grace is that it's a walkout with a nice set of windows and sliding doors, so I have some natural light.

lol, love the recliner right next to your work out equipment.

how portable are these things?

im thinking of getting a pull up bar station thing to put in my garage, and it would be nice if i could place these down whenever im going to be using it and have a softer spot to work out on than just hard concrete.

^ So many stores have these tiles... Some are black and/or grey (like posted above) and are marketed as garage tiles, while others are all the colours of the rainbow and are marketed as baby tiles (used on teh floor to create softer play space). Walmart has packs of 4 tiles (16 sq ft) for fairly cheap, as does Costco, and a trillion other stores. Usually always come in packs of 4. I know the pricing in - not sure how much you would find them for....

The only thing I would check is that the thickness of the tiles is good enough for what you want to use it for. Personally, I've never noticed different brands using different thickness, but who knows --- maybe some specs are different depending on the brand.

FYI: I've also seen 'garage tiles' in grey with diamond plate pattern. I've seen long continuous mats of this material as well (not individual tiles ) --- like a large foam area rug - also marketed for the garage...flat grey and available in diamond pattern too but wasn't quite as thick as the extra padded tiles. The big mats weren't at Walmart though.

BTW, $15 seems really expensive for a pack of four. Ours are way cheaper here (I've seen from $9.00 - $12.00) for four and that's in ....land of expensive. In fact, I even saw them at Walmart this past Friday for $12 (garage tiles) or $10 (colour tiles). Check your Costco pricing.

Looks great

Luv - You are crazy to use horse stall mats. I have put them in probably 20-25 horse stalls at my moms and those things weigh a friggin ton plus they are hard to move around. I am sure they do the job but I can't imagine trying to get them in your house.

I cant remember the name for these, but they are from industrial applications where people stand in a small area for long periods of time. They should be available at a local industrial safety supply.

I know, they are serious friggin mats. My bf insisted, though, for some reason. I was fine with regular gym mats. We just about killed ourselves getting them home, out of the cars, into the wheelbarrow one at a time, and down to the basement door. Not even to mention unchaining them and getting them into place.
