My house is a mix of hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, berber carpeting, and plush carpeting. The Dyson works great on all of them. Had it about 2.5 years and nothing is wrong with it. It gets used every other day due to dog hair.

From both a durability and functionality standpoint I think it's great. And I would never worry about looking foolish for buying something - why would anyone want to propagate a ripoff? I did think more than twice before dropping the coin for the Dyson but as I said before now that I've owned it I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

Got mine December 04 and every time I use it, I love it.

When I first got it, I did the "Dyson Test"...vacuum my house with my current vacuum until it's clean, then go over it with the Dyson. Just one push and pull motion down my hallway sucked a golfball sized clump of dust, dirt, dander, pet hair out of the "clean" carpet. It was insane to see!

I have the purple Animal.

I just bought one yesterday. I too have been listening to real people with real problems, talking to customers and reading this thread.

Our old vacuum was very good, paid over 200 for it and we thought it did a great job. Every time she ran it I was impressed by how much it picked up dirt better than the others in the past. But after our little new years eve party this year, my girl was vacuuming up small pieces of confetti in a pile and the damn thing started whining like a VW turbo-charger. One of the blades to the vaccuum impeller had broken. It still ran but it was noisy now, so it was time for a new one.

I bought the grey DC14 Complete model with the extendable tube, matress attachment and stair brush turbo-head thingie. $459 at Sam's Club.

Just like the others here, last night we vacuumed our living room THREE TIMES IN A ROW with the old one, then broke out the Dyson. Damn if it didn't suck out more dog hair, cat hair, who knows what out of the carpet that the other vacuum didn't. We could also smell carpet fresh that someone else had put down before we moved in!

Now I'm not a vacuum expert, but THAT shit impressed me.

I had to try it. Funny thing, when I touched the handle, I started thinking of Micheal Bolton and making quiche for dinner. Luckily my man powers kicked in and I started thinking of Chuck Norris round-house kicking Micheal right off of his faggot-assed piano bench.

I liked the ergenomics of it, it's functionality and design let it ride perfectly on any surface just right. It's easy to use and light. The hose attachment stretches the entire distance up our steps! We can reach the ceiling fans easily. No other vacuum was as easy to use and no other vacuum sucked out the shit this thing did EVER. I have purchased three vacuums for her in 14 years and this one killed them all.

Yes, it's pricey. Deal with it. It's status. It's cool. It works great. Women dig it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go vacuum a small dog...

My Dyson Animal fell down the stairs again (2nd time) nothing happened other than a scuff on the wall. That thing amazes me every time i use it. I replaced the Oreck withthe animal and it cant even compare!

Just convinced my friend into getting a dyson and he loves it.

I bought the DC15 Ball yesterday at Target...the promo was a free $50 gift card at check-out. Okay why did I get this even though I previously thought people were crazy to spend 500 bucks on a vacuum?

I had vacuumed last week with my Dirt Devil Vision and took mental notes of how it went. Its a basic bagless machine and it gets the vacuuming job done. To clean I pull out the bin and :sigh: proceed to the next task of clearing out the collected dust. I have to take it outside and bang it out for 2 minutes to get the dirt and dust off the central filter. I have to hold my breath to avoid breathing in the cloud.

Being the most dreaded part of the process I tend to leave the bin alone until its absolutely full before cleaning it out. By doing this, the filter is soaked with my dog's odors...which permeates back into the rooms each time I vacuum.

So reading and participating in this thread I do more research on other forums about vacuuming. One writer echoed the same "pet odor" problem until they got the Dyson. Another complained about the hot air exhaust which is a problem in the summer...this was a problem I have but I just accepted it as normal. One last note, another person complained about the noise level of their existing vacuum which really got my attention because I am literally deaf went I'm done vacuuming with the Dirt Devil. All these problems were reduced or eliminated when they got the Dyson.

So I went and bought one and as I put it together I was a little skeptical at the value of this yellow plastic machine. But it all made sense once I turned it on. The noise level is about 4 on a 1-10 scale...whereas my DD Vision would be at 9. The exhaust was never hot, even after 15 minutes...my DD would be hot after 10 minutes. I did a quick emptying after the first room and it appears I can clean it very easily. I didn't notice the odors but I am waiting for it to collect to MAX before I empty it out and then I can update on that issue.

The Ball is a cool feature but I haven't found anything amazing about it. The push and pulling of the vacuum did seem to require less effort, both vacuums are about the same weight but the Dyson was easier to push. It might just be the Ball since the DD has small wheels which probably struggle with my medium carpet pile.

Overall, I am very pleased with the machine. I'm not sure how much better it is at actually vacuuming the same dirt as the DD. But given all the other design features I am really impressed. It really makes vacuuming less of a chore and less offensive to my nose and ears.

So does the vacuum rate a $500 price tag compared to the DD ($160)? I would say probably not for most people who only care about getting the vacuuming done. Just like Consumer Reports, I think it does about the same job as my DD which cost much less. But its the cool features that appealed to me: odors, heat, ease of movement, noise & cleaning...I would and did gladly pay the premium.

We've got a Miele and a Dyson.

Miele blows the dyson out of the water, but it was more money and is a canister vac.

I really want the Dyson Animal...

We currently have a refurbished Kirby from the 70s, complete with lime green floral print bag, but it's a freakin powerhouse. Scott's mom bought it from her trusty vacuum salesperson when we first moved in together and we thought it was gay, but boy, what a great vacuum! It goes to show you that they really don't make them like they used to.

So with such a great machine (that is older than both of us), why would we want a new one? Well, it's really heavy, and honestly, I don't ever remember emptying the bag (Scott may have) which means that it's got 5 years worth of dirt inside it... which means that it can't really suck up THAT much stuff. Cuz we're not exactly clean freaks here... I'm quite certain a lot of dust accumulates on our floors between vacuums.

After reading this thread, the conclusion I have come to is that while other machines may have excellent features and are less expensive, NOBODY has come forth and said "Yeah I have been using the Eureka blahblah for 5 years and love it" whereas several of you are still happy with your Dyson after years of use.

The exception I'm considering is the Oreck XL 21.

I just cant justify throwing down $500 on a vacuum at the moment.

But when my income justifies it, I probably will...

I just ordered the Dyson DC 07 from Kohl's this morning. They had it on sale for $382.49 and if you use your Kohl's charge with coupon code "charge30" you'll get and additional 30% off. So for $297.05 with tax and shiiping I thought it was a great deal.

We just bought the Eureka Boss SmartVac (CR Best Buy) for $150. It's great, especially for the price. The thing sucks the cat hair 3 ft away on the hardwood floors.

We've a had dyson for three years now, the thing I love about it is the power. Now matter if the container is empty or full, it's the same. We had two cats and a dog at the time we got it. Just the dog now. Never a problem.

Vacuumed up the cat, eh?

Ours is still running strong.

The cons are:
1. The hose is a royal PITA
2. The cord is manually wound

I think the new ones have some speaker that makes internet noises over the phone to the customer service number so they can diagnose what is wrong should something happen. Saw it on "Beyond Tomorrow" on the science channel.

If you have a Bed Bath & Beyond in your area get your hands on one of their 20% off coupons. We saved a bundle on our Dyson Ball. It's worth every penny. Only camplaints I have is the hose isn't long enough to go all the way up our stairs, and it is kinda heavy for me to carry up and down the stairs. Other than that, I love it.

wow, 4-10 years on a vacuum? My parent have an areus electrolux vacuuum from 1994 that still runs strong, has had only a service to check suction and to clean up the motor and that was it. Still have all the original stuff and it still sucks up everything as it did when it was new. Also I tried my friend dyson after it and it didn't pick up anything really, just a few hairs and that was it. BTW, i know this is about upright vacuums, just had to put my in on the electrolux vacuum.... BTW, this is aerus electrolux, not electrolux RED

Woot has the DC15 for $319.99 today. It is a refurb and shipping is $5. For those that don't know about woot, they offer a new item each day, always $5 shipping. Sometimes they are crap, sometimes they have good items. Just go to http://www.woot.com/ if you are interested.

I picked up a dyson last week or so and it's doing a great job.
I got it from Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% coupon. I got the purple animal. It was $100 off.

I switched vacuums b/c of the heat and smell one was making from picking up pet hair and litter.

I'm VERY happy with mine at the moment. So far, great investment!
