Do you have a set of formal china?
Just wondering how many people have a set of formal china AND everyday dishes, or do you use just one set of nice dishes for everyday?
If you have a separate set of formal china, how often do you actually use it, and do you think it's a waste?

It's almost a waste but since we display ours in our china cabinet it is not. I think we've actually served dinner on it once in 10 years.
If we just had it sitting in boxes then yes it is a waste.

No. In fact, we're still trying to find a nice set of everyday dishes that won't break the bank. The set we got from Gordman's is horrible. The gf wants square plates.

We've got everyday Corelle in a simple white that coordinates well with our china. Same with the silver and the glassware. That way we can mix the everyday in with the china for larger dinners and not have it be visually obvious.
As to the question of is it a waste, ask two people in this house, get two different answers..... but only one of us got to vote on this poll.

We have both, our good stuff is in boxes. Then when my mother passed, now we have hers as well as her mothers. There all in boxes.
Unless your home is going to be the focal point of family get togethers, you may not want to get a formal set.

We just have simple plain white dishes we use everyday. I don't think we'll be registering for any china either... it takes up storage space and it rarely gets used.

I guess formal china is a thing of the past...

We have everyday plates (like 3 sets of em) and then we have this REALLY nice stuff we keep on display until Thxgiving/Xmas, they're really nice all gold trim'd and red and stuff, I think it's not a waste because it just makes those holidays extra special.

We also bought a set of white Corelle about 3-5 years ago that we use daily-- particularly to reduce further breakage of the original Mikasa stuff.
Any dinner for more than 12 people is at a restaurant, and BBQs only require paper and plastic.

Between my wife's family and mine, we ended up with three sets of formal china and a set of crap from a NYC "seconds" Crate and Barrel from my grad school years. When we moved to an apartment, I ditched all but the Spode, which we use for everyday china. My stepson can now seet 24 folds for a sit-down dinner..... and now he and his new wife host Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners....
I also inherited sterling silver flatware, which was an incomplete set; my parents periodically hocked some of the stuff when they were broke (needed money for booze). My wife and I fleshed out the set from Replacements LTD, which has a great stock of estate silver, china and glassware. If any folks have inherited a partial set of glassware, china or silver, they can ;'register' at Replacements, and get an update inventory pricelist for their patterns about four times a year.

We registered for a set of nicer everyday china, which is still in boxes until we move into a house. I don't see us getting formal china unless we just have money to burn.
Our current everyday set is something I bought from Kmart over 10 years ago. I think it's 8 settings that came in a box and has lasted very well. We also have some correl that we use as necessary.

I voted for two options b/c I wasn't sure what to put. We have an everyday set, a "cheaper" set of formal china, and a good set of formal china. The good set has only been used about 3 times. Typically we use the "cheaper" set of formal china for events, then our everyday for... well, everyday.
