Cost for backyard basketball; half court?
Who would I even call to do something like this? I'd need a bit of a retaining wall due to the slope of my backyard and concrete poured.
What about size... I'm not talking a full half court, but something that is decent size to shoot some jumpers, etc.
Thoughts?

Your raise is giving you false impressions about your physical abilities. I suggest a PS3 and the latest edition of NBA basketball.

What I would do is call a concrete guy. Someone that knows how to do patios. Whatever you do make sure that you can dual purpose it after your NBA dreams end in failure. One thing I can't stand is looking at someone's rusted out basketball setup with an old net hanging by a thread.

you are absolutely right...these sort of things do NOT add any value to your home. It is a complete waste of money and a total eyesore to most people.
Not to mention, such a thing may not even be allowed in the neighborhood by local codes and/or Homeowners associations.
save yourself the future embarrassment of realizing you wasted money and hurt your property value...get a gym membership and shoot some buckets there...

Crabcakes and Football!!!
if you have plenty of room go for it. if you're just trying to fill space, forget it. i'm sure you're not a horrible basketballer. you're just overly caucasian.

Then use a portable/movable net setup so that it can be rolled out of the way when you entertain on your concrete patio. You can also set up a little putting green w/astro-turf, etc. on the area as needed too, even if you paint court lines on the concrete.
Impact on resale value should be minimal-- it's not like putting in an above-ground pool.

Actually just got back from the tempur store. Will probably wait until the bonus is deposited before going that route. Probably going to go with the Rhapsody model.

Scrib, have you thought about something less permanent ?? Like one of the $300-400 portable hoop setups and just set it up in the driveway ??
Or maybe just make friends with some kids down the street ??

It will cost you your dignity. First, you won't use it that much (life gets in the way unless it's a lifestyle) and second we'll be waiting for the "I broke my ankle trying to dunk" thread.
There are serious products that are essentially rubberized modular components made specifically for what you want. I'd imagine they are easier on the body but they look kind of expensive. Example:http://www.snapsports.com/
Simple poured concrete runs $6-9 a square foot here, just have it finished smooth (slippery as hell when wet).

My neighbors have a really nice pad and goal. I'm pretty sure the pole can be removed near the base so if it needs to come down there is only a small pole sticking up.
I guess it just depends on how your house/yard is set up. How much land do you have? I think that makes a big difference as far as having a an equal balance of yard/house/concrete.
Just remember not to cheap out on the goal.
...and yes, some white guys can jump

on to the next one...
I had a half-court SportCourt in my backyard as a teenager, it was the best.
It got WAY more use than our pool did. Far more attractive than a slab and a crappy hoop, but was just over $14,000.

Right after we moved in I bought a portable, adjustable basketball hoop. It was a good system that retailed for around $900 or so (we got it on clearance). I used it about 3-5 times per week the first year we got it. Problem is... I haven't used it since. As Gpump said... like got in the way. We opened our own businesses, got busy, and it has just sat there unused since fall of 2005 when I last shot around on it.
So, I would recommend getting a portable setup first to see if you'll use it. You'll thank yourself for not wasting a ton of money on a court....

concrete paving (4" thick) over aggregate base about $9/sf installed
If you don't need the a.b. about $8/sf.
If you do asphalt instead of concrete $6.50sf
those are Bay Area costs so probably cheaper in your area.
