Day 13

More work on the stairs

At this point, work has slowed down to a snail's pace. I am considering not doing these nightly updates so I don't bore everyone.

Yeah I am kind of disappointed that he wasn't able to easily make the ceiling higher in the kitchen though. I think its at like 7 1/2 feet height or something.

Came home just now and saw this

I didn't know he was going to use metal too. I also don't know how he does all this by himself with no help.

Holy shit, you contracted Super Man. I can't believe that this is just his part-time job. I guess he is busy with Lex Luthor at night.

He doesn't even have a full size ladder! He uses that dinky 4ft step ladder!

I seriously think he morphs into an army of workers while we're not down there.

Good call. I will talk to my parents about that one but I'm not sure if it will go over well.

Don't talk to the parents, talk to the contractor, have him throw it in as a special feature...

Why is that part of the ceiling metal when everything else is wood?

Wall studs are wood in case you need to install any weight bearing supports, shelving, hd tvs, etc. Metal studs around ductwork since it's strictly cosmetic.

Ahh.

So is it safe to assume metal studs are cheaper than wood?

This is what I've heard from another contractor:

Metal is more expensive material but easier to work with (cheaper labor).

Wood is cheaper material but more difficult to work with (expensive labor).

So he said it works out to the same price. I don't know how much I believe that though. That's just what he told me, because I asked the same question you did.

Edit: or it could be the other way around. I don't remember exactly to be honest but either way, he is saying they work out to be the same cost in the end.

Day 19

Just some random pics of various things that were done. The electrician came by today and installed most of the hi-hats and blue boxes. He's coming back to do the wiring on Wednesday because he has to install a new circuit breaker box. Apparently there's not enough room to add all of the 8 new circuits into our current box.

Day 24

All insulation is complete! They came in at 7:30am and finished at 9:30am. I was just waking up by the time they were out the door.

New storage room

Shelf for dehumidifier complete

And later that day...

All drywall was delivered! Pretty talented forklift driver got all 100 boards into the garage somehow. He was just smiling and shaking his head the entire time he was doing it. He couldn't believe it all fit stacked up like that.

Day 25

All drywall was taken from the garage, down the narrow stairs, and into the basement. Poor guys. They were completely beat by the end of it. 4 pieces at a time, 25 trips down the stairs, 25 back up the stairs.

That's all for now. I've been pretty busy with school and final exams so I didn't have time to keep this thread updated, but I made sure I kept up with the progress pictures. Mods, sorry for the multiple posts but I wanted to keep everything consistent and organized.

The space is totally transformed. It feels really strange going down there now. I just can't wait till the theater is done so I can get down there and play some Call of Duty MW3!

I know it really is amazing! And it's sooooo much warmer down there now. Thank god for insulation. Around this time of year it gets to about 55 degrees down there. But now its about 65. Should be nice and toasty when the heater finally gets turned on in a couple weeks.

Plaster guys come on Monday.

Paint and molding should follow a few days after.
