Air Conditioner - Help

My bedroom has no windows, just a door (8' x 6') that opens in the balcony. I have a sleeve for an air conditioner, but I am told that no window ac will work if placed in the sleeve as the sleeve is 18" deep and the window ACs need some sort of exhaust or air (whatever) from the sides as well. This leaves me with only 2 options: either buy a wall unit or a modular unit, both of which are at least twice the price, if not more, than a window AC. On top of it, all the places that I have visited so far (Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, Sears, Home Depot) have no through-wall units. What to do? (except live without AC)

Isn't that against code that a bedroom doesn't have a window?

What happens if you have a fire and the only mode of escaping is through the door?

Egress requirement is for one 5.7 sq ft clear opening to the outside, the door to the balcony more than meets it.
