25lb loss is awesome!
I must admit running can certainly be boring to some people, and I totally understand. I can't run indoors on an treadmill watching tv like some people. I like to get outdoors, put my music on, and get rid of stress while getting exercise. Plus I literally get this natural high afterwords which I love. And it lets me eat all sorts of foods I shouldn't

Ran my last race for a while today. It was a rainy, cold and windy 10 miler. I wasn't running it to really race it, but i was 4 minutes slower, but still below my expected time. The winner was 5 minutes slower than last year, so i felt better about the time.
I have surgery on Wednesday so now i have about 4 months of no running ahead of me. It's time to hit a bike with no resistance for a while. PT starts in two weeks and my journey begins as i climb out of this hole.
The rest will also help my IT band to heal. I have been nursing it for the past month or two.

Surgery went well, from what i was told. I had to be there at three pm but surgery wasn't until 6pm. The Dr. was running about 30 minutes late. It lasted about two hours. The labrum was badly damaged, but repairable. There was a ridge that had to be shaved down a bit too.
This is a partial weight bearing surgery where i am able to use about 30% of my body weight on the repaired hip. It's always amazing to see the vitals as a runner. In the hopsital my bp was 117/82 and 43 bpm in the prep area. During surgery it was about 49. We got to leave around 9:30. I had some rice krispie treats waiting and stopped to get some iced tea. When i got home, i had a bowl of cereal.
Of course i fell asleep right away. I did wake up a few times and fianlly woke around 3:30 as i needed more meds.
Trying to use the bathroom i started to sweat pretty good while i was standing up.
I quickly ate more cereal and one pain med.
My throat hurts from the air tube and of course my hip area is still numb but aches pretty good.
I think i'm going back to bed.

lol, maybe i was still a bit sedated. I figured that i'd get a head start. We were just out for over 4 hours and i'm done for the day. Getting in and out of the car was tiring and exhausting for my leg. In two weeks i start the fun stuff.

One week later, so far so good. I am using crutches most of the time. I admit that i cheat sometimes but it's hard to use them all the time.
Driving is much easier and so is getting in and out of the car. I went back to work last friday. At least this time i took off the day after surgery, unlike last time.
I have to constantly remind myself that i can't eat like i do when i run. I did gain a few extra pounds. 3-4 extra won't kill me.
I have been using the stationary bike for 5 minutes a day with the lowest resistance setting to help reduce scarring. Several others have been using this technique and i don't know if it helps, but it feels nice being able to move.
I go next Wed. just to get stitches out and then will see the DR. the week after. Hopefully the crutches will take a hike.
I stopped taking pain meds the day after and really haven't had much pain.

The stationary bike is going to be your best friend for a while. Keep progressing.
My crazy friend was doing the elliptical 2 days after he had back surgery... the staples were still in his back! He'll be running Boston this year.

He's freakin insane! I hate to admit, but i have been cheating with the crutches. I don't use them all of the time. I know i need to but i don't have any pain and i am being careful to not carry anything heavy and not walk a ton.

^^if the doc cleared you for weight bearing as tolerated....then hey do it...your body will let you know if you've done too much.
as soon as the incision heals completely....get in the pool and start rehabbing to get your running form back.
oh...he also went and dragged a 90 pound sled up at some north pole ultra event 6 weeks AFTER back surgery only 100 + miles in thigh deep snow...yea...piece of cake.

One month later and i am walking around, but a bit slower. The doc wanted one more week of crutches and i could not stand them past 4 weeks. PT has been ok, but hopefully i can get a bit more aggressive with it.
I don't have any pain but the area definitely needs to be strengthened and i can feel it.
I have been using the stationary bike and going on a few bike rides with minimal resistance.
There is no pain going up or down steps, but i can't walk very fast.

My wife and I are pretty new to running (started last fall), so far we've completed the Dallas Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon (2:10) and the Pittsburgh Half marathon (2:13). We've already registered for the VA Beach Rock n Roll 1/2 marathon and it looks like we're both running the Columbus Full (first full marathon for both of us). We've also registered for Dallas again next year and our goal is to be under 2 hrs. Do you have any recommendations for increasing speed? Also, if you have any recommendations for training for the full, that's also much appreciated. We used Hal Higdon's plan for the 1/2 training and are planning on using his marathon plan as well.

^^invest in a HR monitor. Have the patience to use it. A massive aerobic base takes time to build. You can build in as little as 3-4 months with some tempo sessions mixed in. When you are closer to your race prep phase then you add a session of speed work at the track.
If you can, cross train a couple times a week. This will help with the cardio aspect of your training. You also help decrease your injury risk.
Getting faster is relative to your current fitness levels and how you are currently training.

I don't use any of the full or half prep plans out there. I've played soccer pretty much my whole life and I've been running for a long time now so I don't use or need any plan for the half.
But I did run the full Dallas marathon a year ago and that was a beating, I just did my own training with no guide and it was a failure. I finished about an hour longer than I predicted, walking a good part of the last 6 miles; I wanted my legs amputated lol. For the full I should have used a Hal Hidgon plan or something else. If I run another full I will definitely do more training than I did the first time. Don't know if I will use a plan or if I will just be stubborn again and do my own training plan, but definitely more miles and more intense than last time.

Congrats on completing it. Increasing mileage helps to lower times. But, you would need to make most of those miles slower to build your aerobic base like tltrigirl says.
New to this thread and just saw this, that's awesome! Great time as well!

been there done that. I want to use the Hal Higdon plan too next year once i am recovered.
The marathon is no joke as we have found out. I found the walk/run method helpful during the last 3-6 miles, but not next time.

Almost three months after surgery, all is pretty well. I still don't have any pain. I have been riding my mountain bike as much as i can.
I have been doing the stretches and leg lifts and whatever i needed to do to get stronger twice a day for about 20-30 minutes. I have missed a couple workouts in the past two months, but not many.
I had started the water treadmill yesterday. It is freaking awesome. I had spent 85 minutes on it yesterday to feel it out. Today i used the water jet the entire time for an hour straight of running. The jet hits my hip at the right spot and it feels good.
I break a nice sweat as it's also hot in there, boy do i miss running.
So today i rode 17 miles and ran for an hour and only did one session of stretching.
I have run about 5 miles this month. All one milers and real slow. They were 10-11 min. miles.
I was testing the water and all still seems well.
My 3 month follow up is on tuesday so i hope to be cleared to run.

That's good!
I also had plantar fasciitis on one of my feet, but ever since I got the current shoe I use, it went away, and that is even with running the same distance or even more than when it hurt.
Just went for a run yesterday in the middle of the day. Bad idea. Was 95 and sunny. Can't remember the last time I had to take so many walking breaks. And It won't get any easier... supposed to be 100 this week.

I have a high arch and had moderate plantar fasciitis ~10 years ago. My podiatrist showed me a series of stretching exercises, and that treated it. Once a year or two it may flair up, but I can stretch away the re-occurrence. Has your doctor showed you any stretching exercises?

I use one of those wide exercise rubber bands for 1 instead of a towel.

So far so good. I am running just about 10-15 miles per week. I ran 5 miles tonight, which is my longest since March. All felt good and no real pains. My hip muscles ache a little from not using them but nothing major.
I ran a one mile race yesterday and finished in 6:03 and felt strong. It was much slower than last year but i was expecting 7-8 minutes, so this is progress.
I'mm looking to qualify for 2016 Boston next year. I turn 40 in April and as of right now i'd have to run a 3:15 next year unless they change the times.
We're keeping our fingers crossed.

I am just over 10 months post op. I have been putting in weeks up to almost 35 miles. It varies depending on the weather. I have been running mostly trails and the water treadmill. Both have been great in recovery.
I still have achiness from time to time, but nothing that really slows me down.
I ran my first half last weekend since 2013. It was challenging but i had felt real strong though most of the race. It was icy and snow covered. I had knocked almost 12 minutes from my 2013 time for a really quick 1:47. I was only 13 minutes behind the winner, so i thought that was quite an improvement. Sometimes you have to run the trails like you have no sense in your head.
My plan this year was to run a full, but i may have to use this as a rebuilding year, but i think i can run more halves to keep my endurance up.

Almost 18 months post op and all is pretty goo. I am running the steamtown marathon in less than 3 weeks. My mileage has been mainly 40-45 miles per week and i had 52 last week. My last 20 mile training run on saturday was at a 7:44 pace. I'm looking to finish in 3:10-15 to bq for 2017.
I do get some inflammation in my repaired hip, but that's only after crazy miles.
Right now i'm tapering and it feels great.
that is all.
I hope you all are doing well in your running.
