IMO the only reason to consider a vasectomy is if your girl isn't into anal. If she pitches the idea of you getting snipped, you should definitely suggest that maybe she should accept anal instead.

Why does it take 20-30 times for it to be clear? I could understand a few stragglers hanging out in the pipes, but 20 times?

^It's not to "clear the pipes" so to speak - its to make sure the procedure took. Need to make sure that no determined swimmers are finding their way out.

I have read advice from a Urologist in Austin that your should wait until 16 loads or 6 weeks have passed. Then you need to get a test performed to make sure nothing is present.

I would if needed. In fact I will probably down the road. Pregnancy have proved dangerous for my wife as well and we have been careful to not get knocked up again. I just haven't found the balls to go through it yet. PUN INTENDED.

Had a consultation yesterday and scheduled the procedure. 1 Xantac before the appt, 20 min in the office and done. They want one sample after 20 goes and then another sample after 20 more. Two clean samples in a row and they will feel confident in it was successful. 1/1000 times, the vas finds a was to reconnect.

Most people that I know who have done it only paid $5 or so out of pocket.

I don't know yet. Since it is a voluntary procedure, they are checking with insurance. However, most insurances will cover it in a hurry because it is leaps and bounds cheaper than a child. If it is covered, I will only pay 10%. Since it is in the office (no operating room/recovery room/hospital costs) and with no anesthesiologist, it should be well under $1000 in full. It sounds similar to the scope of burning a wart off in the office.

I think when I heard of them cauterizing the ends of the vasa, I likened the scope of the procedure and necessary tools to when I had a wart burned off.

It's tempting as my wife and I both think birth control pills are completely insane if you think about it. Fooling a woman's body into thinking it may be pregnant for years on end has consequences..

My wife can't do hormonal birth control. I think her aversion to the hormones is the reason why pregnancy is miserable to her, and her aversion to hormonal BC is why we have two kids in 1.5 years.

Could you ever go through with a vasectomy? What do you think about losing your swim team?

My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant with our second, and we have come to the realization that pregnancy sucks for her. Since we have a boy now with a girl on the way, we're committed to being done having kids and plan to wrap this family up nicely before the end of the year. I have offered to get snipped and have a consultation next Monday.

What's your take?
Have had it done, five years ago, maybe six... To me it was a no brainer to do. It much easier for the man, than the woman to have the life procedure done. My wife also has never been on birth control, I don't like using chemistry to change what her body naturally does.

I will say, and I beg you to take this advise for once you have had the produced done. Wear tightie whities, If you don't have, buy a three pack and WEAR them while you recover. Also buy about three 1lb frozen peas, to, use instead of ice.

I have had a few friends get snipped, the ones who didn't follow this advised, they went through pain they didn't need to.

Are most of you getting this done because you only want x amount of kids period?

Reason I ask is just say worse comes to worse and you divorce... you find another lady and get married. What happens then? No kids? :o

I don't regret it since I had 2 kids and am single now being that I'm 35. Most women I date have kids anyways as statistically speaking most women get knocked up in their 20's at least here.

BTW I was remembering one bad part during the procedure. Even with anesthesia I felt him tugging and pulling, I assume the tubes or whatever you call them. That was uncomfortable.

You'll be glad for the Xantac during that part.

I met a guy who had a child with wife #1, got snipped, got divorced, and wife #2 wanted a child. He had the procedure reversed, had a child with wife #2, then got snipped again. So it's possible, but I expect he paid a good deal out of pocket for all that work.

Fundamentally we all get it done to only have X kids. But the reasons why may vary. For my wife, she has enough medical issues that the doctors told us to have kids early if we wanted them. Both kids were high risk pregnancies. The third would have likely caused permanent damage to my wife, or worse.

So nobody has gotten married in their mid late 20's and had kids at like 28, 29? Usually single after 30 = red flags. Naturally early 20's is close to accident territory.

I highly recommend Valium too. But that's probably old school.

I was actually laughing during most of mine. I had it done in the military, so of course they had six of us lined up at once and they did them all one after the other. We were all in six seperate but adjacent rooms in this one hall. When they prep you, they basically covered everything around your pelvis with a towell except your sack, which sat on top of the towel and is the only thing exposed. The thought of someone walking down the hall just looking at room after room of sacks sitting out on top of towels had me cracking up through the whole thing.

Did I mention recommending Valium?

You guessed it. No kids. I've brought two into the world, it doesn't need anymore no matter how handsome and intelligent they are. One man, one woman, two kids = sustainability.

Yes. I had a feeling after I wrote that it was wrong. I was probably thinking of my son taking Zantac.

Get a local... that's what's up with the drugs. "Okay, were just going to inject some Novocain into your scrotum with this needle."

I'm not going to inject it, a nurse did. There's no need for a little pill before you go in.

I don't mind drugs. Sometimes I enjoy them. I could make a poll "Would you prefer to be drugged prior to having a needle stuck in your coin purse", but I bet we can both guess the results.
