need help for best friend

my best friend has this situation, need your guys and girls input...

he's been going out with this girl for two years now, and lately they've been on and off now. a few weeks ago, he was gonna give this personalized ring to her, but while it was being made, they broke up. whats kind of adding fuel to the fire was that my friend's mom doesn't really like her, and she is intimidated by his mom. so he wants to give her this ring, but because they broke up, he wasn't sure he wanted to. the girl wants the ring. his mom doesn't want her to have the ring, saying that 'giving it to her would signify that both of you aren't broken up.' he's frustrated with the fact that both sides are aiming this to him, calling him up and getting into heated arguments, so now he just completely cuts off contact from both out of pure frustration (she calls him a coward, his mom says he's running away). now he's completely confused on what to do... he wants to make both sides happy and compromise on the situation

what would you do if you were him?

what do i tell him?
Tell him to fuck whatever anyone says, and do what makes him happy. Thats why we live, to look out for number one, if you're not happy what's the point. Tell him to do what he has to do what he wants to do whoever he pisses off in the process will eventaully forgive him and realize it is his life.
