Question Kids with one divorced parent passing customs.

A biut off-topic, but I know someone in Canada who wants to go in USA for a few vacation days. His divorced ex won't give any NOTARIZED signed letter of consentment. She will sign a non-notarized one, though.

He learnt that that there is NO requirement from US customs to have this kind of letter of consentment of the absent [divorced] parent, but it is a general practice. Furthermore, on Canadian government website, it is highly recommended that a letter of consent for going out of Canada is not only signed, but notarized! He wants to pass the US customs with his original copy of divorce decree (that grants him 50% custody).

Any chance that he will be denied access to USA?

How the heck would customs know that he's divorced with 50% custody in the first place. That wouldn't be on his passport. Are the kids last names the same as his? If so, I'd think he wouldn't have to worry.

btw, i think you should have posted this in Ramblings.

When my son got his passport both me and my wife had to be there and sign for it. I don't know about travelling. I can understand why they would ask for a letter of concent for one parent travelling to a country with their kid though. I think they will question him when he gets to Immigration though.

to start with, get a notarized letter from spouse allowing travel. With the travel document (if child is under a different name), bring along picture ID showing the other name and birth certificate to be safe.

G/f went on a Mexican cruise off LA. They would not let her board as her daughter is under her husband's name (she switched back to maiden name). They wanted him to fax a notarized letter before they would let her on.

Both times when my wife took the kids back to Turkey I've signed a letter of authorization giving my consent for the trip. It's not a requirement but I felt that it was better to have the letter and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Just don't put mayonnaise on him.

Americans don't care for mayonnaise like you Canadians do.
