FWIW, I've done this twice with the first ring and the 20-year upgrade. In both cases I knew my wife very well and knew her taste. However I decided the best thing was to just take her shopping. Much to my surprise she picked something different than I would have - both times. When she looks at her ring now, she doesn't remember our wedding. She remembers the day we went shopping for it.

You're doing a lot of good research, but unless she's told you she wants to be surprised, just take her shopping.

I agree with the other folks that say to have her choose. I was off on the ring I thought my wife would want. I spent more than I needed to. Fact is that was driven more by me. I don't plan on having to do this again.

 

David - You better stop watching chick flicks if you think we all have these elaborate proposals plans. I took my wife window shopping with me to get a feel for what she would like. Then once I had a setting picked out I asked her to look at it. She's the one that wears it.....not me.

It is set in her mind like the diamonds on those rings. There are no brownie points for "doing your best" and trying to do it alone. 99.9% chance you won't get it perfect. Please, for your sake, take her shopping. If you get her the ring she has thought about for 20 years, she will see it everyday and remember how awesome you are for making it perfect. If you don't get her that ring, she will look at it everyday and think about the ring she had been thinking about for 20 years.

The top ring comes with a matching band made by the company, its an eternity band I belive they are called with stones around the entire ring. I still want her to try something similar on and want to see her reaction. She has had a very rough last couple of years and I don't enjoy anything more than seeing her happy. I don't care about $, the ring can be 20k or 5k, whatever I want I will buy. The retail on the top ring is 19995 dollars full insured etc etc. I wouldn't pay anything close to that(1/2), it is a nicer stone than the second ring. I've always liked princess cut better but like everyone else says its what makes her happy! BTW guys I'm 27 I have no debt I simply owe 8 grand on my car and keep it as an open credit line, I have credit cards with zero balances and we just bought our first home and put 35 grand down. So technically after our closing date we will be 96 thousand in debt. I have 8 grand specifically saved up for this. I have assets as a boat, home, three vehicles now, retirement plan, and some investments, it seems crazy to spend money on an overpriced rock but it will make her estatic and she certainly doesn't expect something this big, shes very down to earth and we live within our means! She is a driven, motivated, hard working woman, I couldn't be more proud of her! She deserves something special!

I honestly suggested to her awhile back how I thought it would be awesome to get tattoes under or even as wedding rings, sounds crazy but I'm very unique. I had a life changing experience two years back I almost lost my life twice in a motorcycle accident...It changes your persepective on life.
