Did you know...

...that K-Y, although a harmless lubricant (or so we thought) actually has some sort of spermicides in it which kills the sperm? My Doc told me this the other day... He told me to use mineral oil if I need to use lubrication. That explains a lot of things I wondered that haven't happened yet!

thats good to know... Thanks, now i know NOT to buy that crap... then again, if she really needs it... i have on reserve... "Original Wet Classic" it doesn't contain the NONOXYNOL9...which i think is that spermicidal stuff... but i have this water based crap that works pretty good... I also know it has this thing that makes it warm or something... I recommend this over the Spermicidle stuff...

Just thought i'd let you know...

Again, Its called... "WET: Classic"

I wouldn't rely on it to prevent pregnancy...I'm sure that wasn't the only reason why my wife didn't get pregnant...BTW, the mineral oil works just as fine! I only use a drop though...like the size of a pea..

I think I might look for a new doc Ed. Ain't no spermicidal chemicals in KY. Some people have felt that a LOT of KY could mechanically get in the way of sperm on their travels and thus lower pregnancy rates but who would use or need that much?

Sort of like the sign at the liquor store that warns of alcohol causing birth defects. Could the effect really be that great? Hell, probably the majority of pregnancies happen under the influence of alcohol.

Maybe the large, polar molecules make SOME of the sperm get caught by their large size. This might reduce the chance slightly of getting pregnant, but it's not a spermicide at all. Here's the structure of one of the preservative chemicals in KY jelly:

That's chlorhexidine gluconate.

He didn't say that it has any spermicides in it, but he did say that it won't help you get pregnant because of something in it.

I've always thought "spermicide" would be a cool name for an all girl punk band

Very true. My hubby and I are trying to get pregnant again, so we aren't using anymore lubes. But, if you still need it, I heard you should check out Preseed.

Jinny is a guy on the "other site" who always comes up with elaborate, and usually correct, technical/scientific answers to the most obscure questions. No insult intended.

If K-Y did have any spermacidal effects, I doubt veterinarians would be using it for repro exams :-P

reproductive exam... mostly for breeding soundness. It's a necessary evil if you're breeding cattle or horses...

If you use condoms, mineral oil may damage them. It's also not a good idea to use petrochemicals on or in the body. Nonoxynol-9 can make your "equipment" less sensitive, and many people (myself included) are allergic to it. KY liquid seems to be the best stuff around, but Astroglide (w/o spermacide) is very popular also.
