I was wondering is Xbox 360 better then a modded box? Not for games but for multimedia. I have my modded box running XBMC and stream music and movies and pictures from all of my computers. Just wondering if overall Xbox360 is better multimedia box or are there security things to stop you from doing certain things.

 

I'd say a moddex Xbox is superior to a 360 in regards to the amount of what you can do through the media functions. If you have a Media Center PC, you can do a lot more, but if you don't you can only stream music and pictures to your 360 from your PC. To stream video or perform DVR functions, you need XP Media Center.

 

how hard is it to mod your xbox?

 

If you get a solderless adapter it is not very hard. However, there are issues with errors that come up sometimes with mod chips when installing them. It gets really fristrating to figure out whats wrong. Also, I think some xboxes come with solder in the holes the modchip goes into, that can be hard to get out if you do not have any soldering experience.

 

out of pure curiosity, can you play games on xbox live with a modded xbox?

 

Yes and no. With most mod chips, if you log into Live, they will instantly detect a modified BIOS and ban you instantly. Some of new newest more expensive mod chips now have a BIOS switch that you can go back to the original BIOS to play on Live.

 

Also, you must have the original game to play on Live.

Will that thing work in every rev of Xbox? I bought mine last year so I probably have close to the latest rev (if not the latest)

 

Never mind I found the install instructions for it. Seems it will work. I just have to check the rev on my xbox.

 

Yeah, if you have a 1.6 motherboard things get a bit more complicated, but no where near impossible. Luckily I have a 1.1 and it works like a charm. However, sometimes I get fragging (Light blinks red and it doesn't load) when that happens I have to open the box up take out the chip and put it back in again (basically a hard reset I guess). It works fine then.

 

a modded xbox costs $0 if you have a friend who can do the chip-less mod.
