Xbox 360 RROD FAIL!

Well you won't see me on Xbox Live for awhile UGH..

So I turned on my xbox last night, started to play some MW2, was in my first game for about 2 mins and my xbox freezes. I turn it off and turn it back on and the screen is frozen on the start menu and finally nothing....just 3 red rings.

I go online to submit it for a warranty claim but they deny saying it's out of the warranty period. This is actually my second xbox, the first one that I got at launch was acting up 2 years ago so I traded it in for this one. Since my xbox was manufature in 2008 I knew I was within the 3 years warranty period.

I called this morning and they approved my claim so I'm sending in my xbox. Do any of you guys have a refurbished xbox? Anyone have any issues with a refurbished? My friend told me to just get an arcade 360 because they fixed the RROD with a new chipset.

I've also seen people like Myxomatosis do a water cooled xbox, but I'm more inclined to leave my xbox the way it came...

I had a launch day 360, amazingly it lasted 4 years without a hiccup until it crapped itself. I have a refurbed 360 and no issues at all, though occasionally the disc drive moans when it first starts up.

You can really hear an unlimited number of opinions on this subject. My sis-in-law worked at gamestop and had all sorts of advice/theories and I've read/heard plenty myself. Supposedly the new ones are fine but than I hear some had problems.

I wouldn't BUY a refurb. I doubt they changed chip sets. This I believe is a misnomer. The 360 has gone through something like 4 chip sets. A refurb from microsoft(under warranty) will most likely not have the original gen1 chip set, but it still could have problems down the road.

Microsoft doesn't actually take your gen1 360 and put a new chip set in and give it to someone else, they either try to bandaid the problem and give it to someone else or throw it out. Back when the 3rd gen was already out and I sent my gen1 in, I got a refurbed gen1 in return. Different heatsinks and that's it. I think I covered this subject to death on here, but truth is if you get a refurb from MS you dont know what you're gonna get back. It will mostly likely work, but there's no telling how long.

I've heard plenty of stories about people buying refurbs from other companies or people and have had them not work from the start. Like gamestop, which doesn't test anything before they take a used xbox or sell one, including accessories. So my advice, kind of obvious is either get it from MS under warranty, buy a new one or do what I did.

sorry but to clarify my warranty claim was approved and I sent it in free of charge. I wouldn't buy a refurbed 360 either, the track record is a little shoddy for my liking

I've been using my refurbished xbox for about 1 1/2 years now just fine. It took around 2 weeks to repair and I got 2 months (or something like that) XBL free.

My son's got the RROD about 2 months ago after 2 years of usage. He has had no problems with the refurb MS sent him in return to this point. (On a side note, I can't believe I finally hit 1000 posts! It only took me 10 years to do it).

Make sure you check what the RROD code is - I got the 3 rings the other day, checked the code, and it was complaining about my power supply. I jiggered around with the power cable a bit, and it's happy now.

I also had one where it was complaining about the xbox memory - that one was doomed.

Oh, and you will 100% get another gen1 if you send in a gen1 for warranty. You don't send in your power supply when you send the box in for warranty work, and gen3 uses a different power supply.
The refurb might not work (mine is kinda temperamental, to be honest), but what do you have to lose? (well, postage I guess)

Actually not even postage. MS even picked up the tab on that for us. If anything it cost us a little gas to get the package to UPS.

I tried unplugging everything power/AV cables. I still couldn't get the xbox to start up, just the 3 rings flashing. I ended up sending out my xbox this weekend, hopefully I'll get it back ASAP.

I'm not sure watching netflix and DVDs with my xbox is a good idea anymore. Once I get my refurbished box, I'm solely going to use it for just games. Now I just need to invest $50 bucks into a upconvert DVD player.
