Monitor Not Compatible with Video Card?

I just got a new monitor, a Samsung 2494SW. However, I can only get a resolution of 1024x768 (should be 1920x1080). Is it possible the video card isn't compatible with my monitor? I have the latest drivers for the card and monitor installed. The connection is DVI.

The video card itself works as it displays 1920x1080 when connected to my Samsung TV via HDMI using generic Windows drivers. It even works when I use an HDMI/DVI adapter to send the signal via the DVI output on the card. The monitor itself seems to work, too. I don't have access to another PC with a different graphics card at the moment, but I'm thinking of seeing if I can find one this week to test.

Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

Refresh rate is correct. There's nothing to change on the monitor itself, aside from brightness, contrast, etc.

It shows up as a "Generic non-PnP Monitor" before I associate the drivers with it.

And after you applied the driver/inf file? Does it show as the actual Samsung monitor or Generic PnP Monitor? If not, that's your problem right there.

Once I install the monitor drivers, it shows as the Samsung monitor; however, I am unable to adjust the resolution going to it. I can only do 800x600 or 1024x768 at 60hz. The monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080 at 60hz.

i had a problem like this with my laptop. its video card wouldn't support my monitor's (samsung 22" lcd) native resolution: 1680x1050.

i tried editing the inf file, which was recommended when i searched for a solution.

then i downloaded some program, and i was able to tell the video card which resolution i wanted it to set to. can't remember the name of the program though. it's some chinese company.

That sounds pretty cool. But in this case, I know the card can support the resolution because it works with my TV. I can force the video card to allow me to select the proper reolution with the monitor (ie. I can can make 1920x1080 an option to choose from), but when I select it and hit apply, it doesn't do anything.

My post on the nVidia forums got a reasonable response from one of their techs...it's either the video card drivers or the cable, as in the monitor's EDID isn't sending the supported resolutions to the video card. Don't know what an EDID is, but the concept makes sense. Going to try a different DVI cable later today.

I spent a good bit of time last night testing all the pieces of the puzzle at my friend's office, and came to the conclusion that the DVI port on the monitor is bad. I know bad items come off the line from time to time, but I guess since I've never gotten one (at least that I can remember), it wasn't the first thing that came to mind. Oh well. I've already requested a replacement from Amazon and will be shipping the defective one back tonight. Hopefully, that one works properly .
