Windows Xp question... please help !!

Ok so i have had professional on my Dell desktop since i got it. And then i downloaded the SP2 update ( a couple months ago) and it started doing weird things to my broadband internet... on the first instance the data light on the modem would go out or started blinking, well in short, i started having problems with the internet, and then i uninstalled SP2 and everything went back to normal... no problems...

and then after a while, i again downloaded SP2 (like two days ago) and installed it on my desktop, ok everything seemed to be fine for like a day or two, but then after like two days of installation the internet started working really really slow (nothing wrong with the modem this time)...

now here is the kicker, my laptop has SP2 installed in it since i got it thru factory, and that has given me no problems at all, i have a router, so i plug my network cable directly into the laptop if im not using the wireles... and it gives me NO problems...

And now i finally got done uninstalling SP2 on the desktop and voila, everything seems to be in order...

Does any one have any explanation for this ???

i guess that explains it... i mean with or without SP2 is fine by me, i jus like to keep my stuff updated and all, and then i really liked the pop up blocker in IE, i know there r many pop up blockers out there, but it just seems to be imbedded with IE and work better, to me atleast... o well... looks like im not the only one without SP2...

Or do a search here, there's been plenty of discussion on it in the past. For every person that shares Ken's opinion, you'll find one that does not. Myself included.

Can SP2 cause problems? Absolutely. Is it riddled with bugs? No. IMO, 80% or more of the problems encountered with SP2 were the result of unupdated or poorly written drivers, unupdated or poorly written applications, or pre-existing configuration problems that weren't noticed before. We have deployed SP2 on over 400 machines at work with probably a > 95% success rate. I bet I could count on one hand the ones that had problems that weren't already riddled with viruses, spyware, etc....

Anyway, make sure everything on your problematic machine is up to date and then make up your own mind after doing research.

to Billiam.

I have it on all my personal PC's, and I am in the process of putting it on all the PC's in my office. No problems on anything yet.

Is your firewall on Intox?

I waited a long time to install SP2 on my home laptop. I decided the best way to do it without facing any problems would be to do a clean reinstall of XP and update it with SP2 before I reinstalled all my programs.

It seems that doing a full driver update check, full spyware check, disk cleanup, then disk Defrag before doing the SP2 update is the way to go. Worked much better that way for me and some people I know. And yes Firefox is the only way to go for web browsing.

You tell FireFox what you want: Go To TOOLS ===> OPTIONS ===> Downloads, look to the upper right on that screen, all the DL options are there.
