Question Video Card

My specifications:

Computer
Dell OptiPlex GX1p
Pentium III 450Mhz
640M PC100 SDRAM
Linux OS
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...gx1p/Specs.htm

Monitor
Dell 2405fpw
http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_UltraSh...-31335738.html

I need to upgrade the video card in my old computer to support the new monitor. The old computer supports PCI only. I'm having trouble finding a video card that supports the resolution I need on a flat panel (1920x1200). The video card memory isn't super important to me. I'm just using this older computer as a Linux box. I've spent some time digging around and I figured some of you guys might be able to toss me a few video card names.

So basically what I need:
1920x1200 flat panel resolution support
VGA connector
64+ RAM
PCI connector
Not super expensive (<$100).

Seriously ... thanks a ton if you know of a good one.

Congrats! Your monitor is worth 10x your PC value!

Seriously though, I don't have any knowledge anymore of PCI based cards. That's two generations old so your gonna be hard pressed finding one that supports 1080p. Plus, your CPU would be worthless.

lol, there are plenty of cards still made for PCI bus, just i dont know why you would want to continue upgrading on that pc.

I bought a new computer and the monitor came with it. I wanted to keep my old machine to use as a linux box but didn't want two monitors. The new monitor has a dvi input (used for the new computer) and a vga input (for the old linux box). It works fine but the image on the old linux box gets distorted because its P.O.S. video card can't handle high enough resolutions. I don't want to dump a ton of money into the old machine but I don't mind spending a few bucks to upgrade the video card.

ahh i see, then take a look in the link i posted, and it doesnt matter if the video card only comes with a DVI port because they almost always come with a DVI to VGA adaptor.

That's cool to know. The one thing I noticed was that some video cards have a maximum resolution way beyond what I need but then they have a separate flat screen resolution of say 1600x1200 which is under what I need. Does anyone know why this is?

Most cards I look at don't even list specific resolutions (just maximum). I know 1920x1200 is a weird resolution and I need to make sure the video card I select actually supports it.

Most only list maximum these days because that's all that's important to know. Any resolution below the max is assumed to be supported becauase it can achieve that max resolution.

I've got a linux server hooked up to my 20" Dell LCD. the 20" though is a secondary on my primary windows machine. luckily the monitor has multiple inputs so I didn't have to worry about hooking it up via the KVM (although the keyboards are).

And just to show how old my graphics card is in my linux server, it's a Matrox G400, at least 5+ years old. But I have no need to upgrade that machine at at just like you.

Although this year may be the year it is upgraded and then it'll stay that way for at least 3-5 years again.
Now if only Linux supported rotated displays
