Which system would you buy?
I have been debating which is better Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii or Playstation 3. My boyfreind says get a 360, thats only coz he already has the WII. What would you guys pick??
XBox 360 because :
*better games (IMO)
*better online gaming which (literally) half the fun
*been out the longest therefore there's more (a lot more) used copies you can get for CHEAP.
The Wii is still kinda a pain in the ass to find right now anyway,
PS3 ... meh

btw, I do own the 360 AND PS3 (basically just a Blu Ray/DVD player right now)... Had the Wii for about a month, never open it... couldn't see myself standing in front of the TV waving my arms around with the control(s) around for the neighbors to see... BUT it would be cool when friends come over... I just rather go to their house to play the Wii.
^^ This is why God invented curtains. :P
In general, XBox360 for first-person shooter or action games .. Wii for pure fun or a party atmosphere.
My opinion on the PS3 may change later, but at the moment, it has no place in console gaming world right now except something to clown on.

For a woman (and I am not being disrespectful), but probably a Wii is more for you. If you pose the question, I take it you're not a hardcore gamer ... so the only logical choice would be a Wii.
1) XBox360 -- definitely for Halo3, other 1st person shooters, and XBox Live (online gaming)
2) PS3 -- tries to be too much but not good in any one particular area; Blu-Ray player may be a good thing ... but games are scant (but some have good quality) however, hardware is still expensive, despite the massive price cuts. And do you really want to watch the included Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray? I would wish they cut the price an extra $10 and not give me that crappy movie (if I ever thought about buying a PS3)
However, if your BF already has a Wii ... just use his. Take it back to your house to "try out" and never give it back. Save yourself money.
(That's what happened to me with my Sega Genesis ... Damn ex...

I second that. Admittedly I've never really been a Playstation fan, but I was considering getting a PS3 in addition to the 360 until they came out with the ridiculous $600 price tag. I know a lot of that was because of the BlueRay, but come on, I don't buy a game system to watch movies, I buy a game system to play games. If I want to watch movies I'll watch it on my DVD player, if I really wanted a Blue Ray player, then I'd buy one separately. I hated the way Sony tried to force their technology on people. Nintendo gets it, and to an extent Microsoft gets it as well. However Sony doesn't. Even with the decrease in price, I'm still not getting a PS3. In addition PS3 doesn't really have any games anyway. 360 on the other hand is cheaper, has more games and doesn't "force" their technology on people. If people want the HD-DVD player, then they can buy it seperately. People who are not going to use it anyway are not forced to pay for it. In addition the 360 has been coming out with a lot of games lately, much more than I expected. And many of them seem really good. Of course the only drawback to the 360 is they seem to have a lot of hardware issues, but getting an extended warranty, or better yet a replacement plan for 50 bucks, and its still more worth it then the overpriced PS3.
All I can say about the Wii from the few times I've played it in the store, is that I don't think I could really get into it. Though I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan since the old 8-bit NES days, I don't think I'll ever get one; but I do know that A LOT of people want one, but its pretty much impossible to find right now. So if the OP's boyfriend already has one, I'd get the 360 (with a replacement plan)
I voted for Xbox360 if I had to choose one.
I have that and the Wii... I think if you can afford to purchase them, get all three. Each system has those games that are exclusive and must plays.

PS3 for now.
Reason based on the stuffs they have in Best Buy:
1) They have 3x the BluRay movies stocked than the HD DVD in Best Buy.
2) It is $299 fully loaded with WiFi, Free Internet, etc. You need to add this and add that to Xbox $$$
3) The quality of the hardware is clearly better than the Xbox
4) If for any reason PS3 fails, you can always buy a Xbox later on; and use the PS3 as a movie player.

blah blah blah... but when it all comes down to it... the 360 simply has MORE games... WAAAAAAAAAAAY MORE. AND better ones...
I mean... do a poll, ask people if they use their consoles mainly for games? or... the internet? or Music? or pictures... hmmmm what else? Who da hell actually surf the internet on their consoles? I tried it for like 5 minutes... it was a pain in the ass
IF suppose the PS3 "fails" as you put... which I don't think it will... by then, (assuming that Blu Ray has won the war vs. HD-DVD), Blu Ray players will be like less than $50 anyway...

1) She asked about a "gaming" console, so this point is moot.
2) Where are you seeing it for $299? The cheapest I've seen it for is $399...
3) Actually, it's been proven numerous times that the hardware components are better in the 360 than the PS3 (specifically the graphics processing). If you've ever done head-to-head comparisions between the same game, you could easily see how this comes into play (frame rates suffer considerably on the PS3 versions).
4) Again, I don't see this as an "advantage" since she's looking for a console.
To the OP, you still haven't mentioned what type of games you play (shooters, sports, RPGs, etc).
Still, I'd unequivocally recommend you get the 360 over the PS3/Wii since it provides you the most options gaming-wise

when you add in the HD-DVD player and wireless internet the PS3 is cheaper then the 360 in an apples vs apples

I guess I'm a videophile snob and would never use a game machine to play HD-DVD / blu-ray discs in my home theatre.

I think Sony is going to the right direction but they just charge too much for every body this time around. So, every body is buying Xbox and the Wii instead.
But for the OP, I think you should pick the console that has the game you like to play as the first priority.
I voted for the PS3...then again, I'm obviously in it for the added functionality (i.e. Blu-Ray player). And oh, the upcoming games due starting in 2008 are also worth considering if they appeal to you. The 360 is a fine system but since all of its "killer games" are all first-person shooters, the machine does absolutely nothing for me.
Honestly, your question is really tough IMO. You're essentially asking us to tell you which food is better. You need to decide what matters to you most in a gaming system. For example:
- Do you want cutesy games?
- Do you like first person shooters?
- Do you want Blu-Ray? HD-DVD?
- Do you care if the machine sets on fire?
- Does Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid appeal to you?
I mean, I could go on with the questions. So, you should do your homework.
Or, in some cases, just by 'em all.

2) Where have you seen the system for $299? They just slashed the price on the 40 gig version to $399. I haven't heard of any other cuts.
3) Says who? Most people seem to think the X360 hardware is better... game developers included. If you're talking about performance as in people getting the Red Rings... the percentage of people who get that are the same as the percentage of people who's PS3's overheat. So no advantage to either system there.
4)
I honestly don't even have a reply for this one. She should probably pickup a Betamax off of eBay too... b/c if it fails she can pickup a VCR later on
For the OP... if you really need to buy a system for yourself, I'd go X360. If your BF didn't have a Wii, that would be my vote and I would agree with Derrick that most females like the Wii best b/c typically they are not hard-core gamers and would lose interest in the X360 or PS3 very quickly... but since he has a Wii already... I voted 360.
If I could only get one, the 360. I got it specifically for Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden 2 and the fact that I can use it to stream media from my computer isn't too shabby either.
Of course, when GoW 3 and DMC 4 hit, I'll be forced to buy a PS3, hopefully at a decently reduced price.
