You are the exception to the PSP marketing rule
Those Japanese guys need something to do when they sit down to pee....they demand it....and Sony will deliver to the masses.
Sit down peeing for guys is huge in Japan....along with hair product, purses, clothing accessories.....:theghey:

Nom Nom Nom Nom
I have one. Got it after my DS got stolen. Have Gran Turismo (which is horrible). Gods of War (Pretty good) and Metal Gear Solid (Pretty good).
I dont mind it, but in hindsight, I should have gotten another DS.
I don't regret the purchase, but I don't really play it enough to have justified getting it in the first place. Had I gotten another DS I could have at least played with my daughter again.. Oh well.

3G Support, OLED Screen for PSP2...
But, since it is not made by some fruit company, it sucks.
Anyhow...from IGN:
Anyhow...from IGN:
Sony's PlayStation Portable successor hasn't been officially announced, but it's already looking like a beast of a system. Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper has some additional details today a few days ahead of a press conference that is expected to mark the system's official debut.
According to the paper, the PSP successor will have a 3G connection. In Japan, this will be provided by NTT DoCoMo.
The 3G connection will be used for online gaming and for downloading movies and games. Users will not be able to make phone calls.
Different from Wi-Fi, which requires hotspots, users will be able to access the 3G connection wherever DoCoMo cell phone service is available. This likely means a permanent connection throughout Japan, as DoCoMo is Japan's largest cell phone carrier. The system will also have WiFi support similar to the PSP, of course.
The paper did not say if users would incur a monthly charge for accessing DoCoMo's network. It also did not mention equivalent providers for overseas access.
Other bits mentioned in the Nikkei article include the inclusion of an OLED touch screen and a newly developed processor for outputting high end visuals.
The paper also has a few details on Sony's games-focused cell phone device. This will offer button controls, making games easier to play when compared to other smartphone devices. The set will use Google's Android operating system and will allow users to access non-game software.
Nikkei is usually a reliable source for early leaks. In fact, we're having a hard time recalling when the paper did not get early notice of an impending hardware announcement.
Except to hear more details on Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable at a press conference on the 27th (Japan time).

I shoot people
I don't understand why they don't just make it a little smaller and make it a damn phone already... It's never going to catch up to Nintendo's DS sales, it might as well jump in on the cell phone market. Recruit some good companies to make games for cheap and down-loadable.

DS is a dedicated gaming machine.
The PSP is "trying" to be something more.....yet doing it half-assed.
Why not commit and do the logical thing: add a phone......oh wait...that would mean Sony would have to compete with Apple.

And yes, I've played the Gameboy...and although the product is quite a winner, it does not make the PSP worse. The PSP offers things that the Gameboy cannot: the occasional movie on the go, music, internet surfing, and the of course, the games I don't get from Nintendo.
So, why would adding a phone make the PSP any better...? How can the ability to dial someone make the PSP a "complete" or less "half-assed" device...? You're already calling it half-assed with its reported features and so, it lost the minute it was out of the gate in your mind. You clearly don't think the original PSP is all that either.

And just for the sake of discussion, WTF is the iPad...? A dedicated what...? Web-surfer? If it was for web-surfing, I'd sure the hey enable Flash. But, oops...it can't. So, by virtue: it is "half-assed".
An e-book reader? I dunno...the screen sucks in daylight and I can get way more time (battery charge) and better ability to read outdoors in a lowly Kindle. So, oops...iPad is "half-assed".

it's not just PSP trying to be something more
with that said, voice plan would add up extra dollars to user end
how many people would go that route and throw out their already contracted phones?
not to mention, although different branch as SCE, already existing Sony Ericsson takes care of cellular phone market
i personally think SCE made the right decision to only add 3G data to PSP as VoIP would be an easy add-on for them as well.. a lot of people in the world relying heavily on public transportation will appreciate it i'm sure
although 3G would be most useful watching movies/mv/music rather than games since a lot of games depend highly on latency of your connection, but you can think of more open market for games to enter such as what a lot of you play on iphone "word with friends"

As far as the PSP is concerned, it better have some killer battery tech to go along with all that power. If a portable device can't give you a solid 5+ hours of use, then it is not worth it.

^ Well, bigman...I was more trying to point out Moog's comments about the PSP, as he puts it, "trying to be something more.....yet doing it half-assed."
I want to know how Apple, which can do no wrong, is not doing their product "half-assed" then since the flaws I pointed out are all, well...by the logic of the argument: half-assed since they don't execute the whole meal deal.

<<---Not really an iPad fan.
However it appears the iPad will get a flash memory slot...and that will make it a worthwhile "complete" device.....Apple is dealing with the issues in version 2.0.
The PSP is stuck in the past. The consumer today wants a device that does almost everything. A dedicated game device is good for kids, but for teens and adults....not so much.
Why Sony is afraid to compete with other smartphone makers...I have no idea. Perhaps because the "new" walkman was such a dud.?
Sony is going to make a PSP that is one small piece short of a smartphone...and the ability to make a call would be icing on the cake for most people......and perhaps be the big difference between big sales, or falling behind Nintendo once again.
I think Sony could do it...and should. Why does a company like Sony not have a real competing product for the iPhone which has become a multimedia machine with a phone.
With the Playstation fanbase as support, I think Sony should create a portable multimedia device that can go up against the iPhone....and why not?
Why not compete in this market? Clearly gaming is an automatic win for Sony.....so why not add the simple easy extras.
...or like Apple create PSP with and without phone....the same way there is an iPhone and an iTouch.

^ Irrational...? Nah. Just more like a life-choice to not buy the product. Consider it like religion.
But, my hatred for Apple has nothing to do with what I think is wrong with your view here.

But, I'll say this: You're harping on adding ONE feature to the PSP, which is the ability to call people, that I think is overrated.
The PSP is clearly a protable gaming device first and takes what the bare-bones gaming concept that is the Nintendo Gameboy a few steps further. You can watch a movie...you can listen to music...surf the web. But, if you want to dial someone. Do that on something else.
Can you imagine a phone option on a device so big? One of the things of the PSP is the control pad and screen size. If you add a phone feature, you're back to carrying circa 1980s-size. Yeah, that'll see real well.
And why in the world would they want to go up against the iPhone? The PSP was NEVER made to go against the iPhone.

Why go up against the iPhone? Seriously? .....because the world is changing....in fact already has. Everyone wants a device that does EVERYTHING.
PS3....it does EVERYTHING......see, even Sony knows this all too well.
The consumer wants to be connected to all content, all multimedia, all communication, in one device. Whether stationary, or mobile.
For Sony to not compete at this level for mobile devices is...well
