Well, that was the end of that!

Perhaps the mods want to merge this with the other PSP thread?

Have you read any of the articles written about this item. First of all, when it was initially launched in Japan back in Nov, it was sold out w/in 24 hours (all 200K units), that was why Sony delays launching this item from Jan to March for the states so that they could increase the supply to 1 millions on launch day, which will no doubt still not be enough. If you're not in line right now to pre- order, good luck getting your hand on one. Btw, eb games and game stop had already stopped taking pre orders. Only ecost.com still have some left in their inventory.

and by george, I think he got it! j/k

And the graphic on it is much better than some more expensive media player

the above one is from creative, w/ 4:3 screen ratio and costs $400+, granted it has a 20 gb hard drive, but so what, the psp screen is 16:9 ratio, and much clearer.

Cool

We’re hard up to get you shots of their gear right yet, but Logitech announced today what appears some of the first American PSP accessories (15 days left, guys!), which will include the PlayGear Pocket case (keyword: “virtually indestructible polycarbonate shell”, meh) with flip-up lid for $20; the PlayGear Stealth headphones—just your generic canalphones, but for a mere $20; the PlayGear Amp, an attachable $80 set of portable speakers to go with your $250+ portable console; and, finally, they’re offering up the PlayGear Share, basically just another $0.35 1/8th-inch audio jack splitter, but for $10. So, you know, standard fare. Where are the crab-bot leg kits so the PSP can scuttle around, following us and making sure we don’t forget it somewhere?

It's not JUST a portable gaming device, it's a PORTABLE MEDIA PLAYER also. It plays movies (on Sony's propriety format called universal media disc or UMD) and it's also an mp3 player.

Talking Update

European gamer friends, get the tissues (or credit cards) ready. Sony is delaying the launch of the PlayStation Portable in Europe by “several months” in order to meet the demand on this side of the pond (sorry, suckas!). The PSP was originally supposed to launch in Europe close to the same time as the North American launch (just a few weeks later), but Sony’s factories haven’t been able to pump out the little fingerprint collectors fast enough to do a simultaneous launch. They’re now going to wait and see if they can meet the demand in the US before setting a European launch date.

OMG, they better do, or you can just rip it onto the memory stick. See instruction via the link below.

Sony Turns PSP Into Music Player

Speaking in California today at the 2006 Game Developer's Conference, Yair Landau, vice chairman of Sony Pictures, revealed Sony's plan to transform the PSP into a legitimate music player.
After the system launches in North America at the end of the month, the company will make available software that will allow users to download songs from its Connect music service. Initially, the software will run on the PSP and use WiFi to download songs directly to the Memory Stick. Later this year, the company plans to release software that will let the PSP link to PCs and Macs.

I got my PSP Last night from the local video game spot. Its not one of the big name stores, its the one with the chinese dude that gets everything 2 weeks early. Anyway he has about 20 of them, and the kid in the store called me when they went to pick em up from the warehouse. The only thing is that they havent gotten a full shipment of games yet. So i am playing ridge racer and watching spider man for now. Its awesome, the screen makes shit look better than the PS2.

Cool more PSP update

It’s not just Lions Gate and a bunch of random Japanese companies that are going to be releasing movies on Sony’s new UMD format, now Disney, in form of subsidiary Buena Vista Home Entertainment, has committed to putting out at least five movies this spring that you’ll be able to watch on your PlayStation Portable—”National Treasure,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “Reign of Fire,” “Kill Bill Vol. 1” and “Hero”—with more to come later on. If Sony can get one or two more studios on board then these sorts of announcements are going to officially stop being newsworthy

Gamers Go Under the Counter for New Sony Gadget

Fri Mar 18, 6:15 AM ET

By Adam Pasick

LONDON (Reuters) - Gadget lust is in full bloom at the electronic retailers on London's Tottenham Court Road, where "gray market" Japanese imports of Sony's new PlayStation Portable bring in more than three times the official price.

"We sell plenty of these -- usually 10 or 20 a weekend," said a salesman at MBA Technologies, a shop in London's consumer electronics retail district, as he reached under the counter for one of the sleek portable gaming devices that the store is selling for 300 pounds ($577).

Sony has been churning out millions of PSPs -- a multimedia device that the company hopes will be a breakthrough hit on par with Apple's iPod -- but has been unable to keep up with demand. In addition to games, the PSP plays movies and digital music files and also displays photos.

Earlier this week it was forced to push back its European launch date by several months to ensure there are enough units for the U.S. launch next week.

The staggered global release of the PSP has created a thriving underground market for the devices.

Retailers like MBA, who receive their PSPs from Asian wholesalers, are not condoned by Sony but are not illegal either. Nevertheless, the shop sells its PSPs from under the counter, available only if customers request them. The paperback book-sized device is encased in a Sony box covered in Japanese text.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, the division responsible for PlayStations in the region, declined to comment.

The PSP went on sale in Japan in December, retailing for 19,800 yen ($190.20), and supply is still tight. On opening day, gamers were limited to buying one PSP each and recruited homeless people to stand in queues, according to press reports. Only one store only displays a PSP on Tottenham Court Road in central London, where there are dozens of electronics stores scattered amid shops selling designer stationary and chic folding chairs. The second-hand retailer Electronics Exchange said it has sold about a dozen in the last two weeks at 300 pounds each.

When the PSP first came out in Japan, importers scrambled to get their hands on units which they resold in the United States for $500 or more -- prices dedicated gamers were all too happy to pay.

But as the U.S. launch approached prices fell dramatically, a trend that will probably take place in Europe as well.

According to a page on Amazon.co.uk, the device is due to be released in Britain on June 24 with a price of 179.99 pounds. Sony has said it will sell the devices in America for $249 as part of a value pack that includes a copy of the movie "Spiderman 2."

"The market perceives, and probably rightfully, that there is going to be product available," said Mark Argento, a games analyst at ThinkEquity Partners.

One U.S. importer, National Console Support, started the PSP Value Pack at more than $510 but has dropped it twice to $380.

(Additional reporting by Ben Berkowitz in Los Angeles)

($1=.5199 Pound)

($1=104.07 Yen)

I don't know about your local Wal Mart there, but here in Houston, I was told from an employee today that they already have it in inventory, but legally can't sell it until midnight March 24. So maybe you want to ask them about it, to see if you can be there at midnight on this coming wednesday.

Question Sony PSP **10 million shipped**

For those of you that have one, is it worth it? Do you actually spend time playing it? I'm worried that I'll spend 300 bucks and never use it. EB Games has a deal for 379 for the PSP with 3 games, and I was thinking of ordering it. I never even seen it up close or played it yet. Is it worth the money?

I haven't played mine in weeks. I believe I was conned into getting one because of the Spiderman 2 offer and also because supposedly the first ones were made in Japan, with later ones made in China - (supposedly the ones made in Japan are of higher quality). Those two factors made me buy it. I think I would use it more if I ever get a 1gb+ memory stick... it plays music quite well.

For games, it seems to me that the best purpose for PSP is if you're like totally bored, waiting in a long line or something - buying a car at a dealership - waiting at the doctor's office - or events such as this... of course, you can't just whip it out and start playing - there are load times, startup times, etc... AND on top of that, the thing isn't exactly small - I mean, you can't carry it around with you everywhere you go, imo - unless you like having a noticeable bulge in your pockets. That being said, when I'm in a line, waiting for an elevator, train, in a cab, whatever, and feel bored - I've been playing Tetris on my Treo.

I've yet to try multiplayer with another PSP or group of PSP's, I think that will be fun too, especially for Gran Turismo (which is another draw for me, not surprisingly). So that is another appeal - but obviously that requires multiple PSP's. And only one of my friends has one atm.

So here is how I see it. The PSP as it stands, right now, doesn't have a lot to offer. But I think in a year or so I will be happy I bought one. But at the moment, I wonder why I bought it. It's nothing more than a novelty atm.

I play mine more than my xbox at the moment. If you enjoyed a GBA it is much better IMO.

I haven't taken advantage of the music/movie capability, but the graphics are amazing for what it is. If you are looking for awesome portable gaming, go for it. If you aren't really into that sort of thing, save your money.
