role playing games

I decided I want to take the next step to becoming a full fledged and pick up a rpg. I've never played anything before, closest I've come is a game or two of socom II online.

What should I get? Whats fun? Was thinking about warcraft...

online or offline? for offline, get the either baldur's gate package (baulder's gate, bg2, bg2 expansion). That should keep you busy for ~300 hours

What kind of RPG are you looking for? They're absolutely my favourite type of game. I tend to prefer single player non-online RPG's. If that's the case, I'd suggest trying any of the Final Fantasy series (either on emulation for the old ones or some are available for PC in the new ones). Also you could try Neverwinter Nights. If you're interested in getting a console system, the PS2 has hands down the best RPG's. Final Fantasy X and X-II, Xenosaga and Xenosaga II, and you can you play all the previous PS1 games on it, such great titles as Final Fantasy VII or VIII, and remade old RPG's like Final Fantasy VI (my all time favourite FF game), and Xenogears (best story EVAR in a game, period.).

If you prefer online mutiplayer RPG's, I second Baldur's Gate. You could also try Final Fantasy 11 (cost might be prohibitive, has a monthly fee), Diablo II(once you buy the game, online play is free), or World of Warcraft (this is somewhat of a strategy/RPG).

Final Fantasy series, Xenosaga, Jade Empire...I could go on...

You may also want to look up some of the reviews online at places like ign.com for input. It also depends on what genre of the RPG appeals to you (i.e. Fantasy, Sci-Fi)...

I bought Diablo 2 last week. This game sucks. All you do is run around and click on stuff and that makes you swing a sword at it. Graphics blow too.

I'll try wow, thanks yumchah/youngtl

NP, Beetroot...

Diablo 2 is a dungeon crawler a la Gauntlet...So, definitely not what you're looking for...

WoW, EQ2 or Guild Wars for online RPG

If you want a fun offline, I'd recommend Morrowind..

I'm surprised no one recommended Knights of the Old Republic. I really enjoyed the game even though I really like RPG's.

I loved Diablo and Diablo 2, but I like to keep my gaming pretty simple. Don't really play games anymore, but I'm sure there's a bunch out there that are fun.

no one will ever answer me about diablo 2...

I think its the worst game I've ever played. You just run around and double click on the thing you want to kill and he goes and swings his sword at it. The graphics are awful, and clicking on stuff to kill gets old in two minutes. Am I missing something?

Highly recommend any Final Fantasy game for offline play. I don't play online so I can't help there.

I thought I answered you about Diablo when I mentioned how it's like Gauntlet?

yeah I had no idea what that meant though...

I'm just curious if I'm playing it right or if I'm doing something wrong.

Well, Diablo is a hack n' slash dungeon crawler game. It's not considered an RPG.

Yep. It's a mindless game. Pretty much think of it as a vertical shooter with people instead of ships...It's not for everyone...

starting out is no fun, especially without friends. once you get some good stuff its more fun. the fun comes when you work on finding really godly items, or dueling other people

I hate RPG's, but i have played them till the end before. If i were you i'd start with a dingle player game, just to get yourself aqquainted with the building up of you r character, turn base battles, and long hours of play time. Jumping into a MMORPG will be a little overwhelming for a first time Rpger.

FFXI is OK for the PC but it takes way too much goddamn time to get anything accomplished.

rogues do massive damage and can cloak and rely on positional damage

warriors are tanks and can do some pretty good damage as well

shamen are the lamest most overpowered characters ever

pallies are impossible to kill but do no damage

mages are easy to kill but have ranged dps and can sheep enemies

druids and priests are healing classes and everyone is always looking to group with them

warlocks do epic amounts of damage and have pets that do different things and can summon

hunters are like rogues but with bows and pets but cant cloak

I made myself that big thing that looks like an ox, and made him a warrior. Game seems pretty cool.
