RANT: misleading "Wii" Products

You know I'm pretty mad about all this crap is see saying its for the wii such as SD cards. You make them white slap a Wii lable on them and charge on 3-4 times what you can pay for a kingston or memorex or whatever SD card. Its a FREAKIN SD CARD

SanDisk is getting thrown under the bus!

SanDisk 2gb SD card= 9.50(from newegg)
SanDisk 2gb SD card with white paint and "For Wii" lable 19.99!!!! (newegg) are people really that stupid?

Then comes controlers it urks me to see soo many people making white game cube controlers and saying that it for the Wii and charging what you can go into any overpriced game store and pick up about 2-3 gamecube controlers in a variety of colors.

keybords for wii are usually over priced seeing as how you can use ANY usb keyboard. hell I have a usb keybord that I can grab right now without moving. and no its not the one im typing on just sitting there not doing anything.

The biggest thing is i have seen gamecube games for sale that have a sticker saying "for wii" and charging like 50 bucks for a old ass GC game.

Thanks for "listening"

No different than the "audio" CD-R's Memorex and TDK sell. But, misleading branding irks me too.

That's bad but its buyer beware.

Also, the Wii products aren't as bad as this thing:

http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3429.asp

It's a $499 Ethernet cable marketed to "audio enthusiasts."

OMG please tell me that is a joke.. Please.

Digital cables are NOT LIKE analog cables. They either work, or they don't.

In Denon's defense, it is a really nice cloth cable. I'd pay $20 for it if I wanted to show off my network.

"Check out my data pipe."

At least Denon didn't just re-package bright yellow PVC Cat 5.

Right, they wrapped it in a nice fiber casing first and then added neat little plug covers at the end.

that cable is pretty but if i didnt know any better with all there High this and high that... when you read the description you expect a high price.

If I had those kind of word doctoring skills I would be able to write up awards and evaluations like no other.

Shield doesn't mean it's CAT 6 or 7. There is also a shielded twisted pair CAT 5. The only difference between CAT 5 and 6 is CAT 6 can operate at a gigabit and at a higher frequency. Although with an unshielded CAT 6, you'll lose performance with length.

Sorry if it's thread jacking. And I also agree with brand labels making the same thing more expensive. Back then a 2 GB MSPD for the PSP labeled FOR THE PSP cost more than just a regular Sony MSPD. Now I guess they realized it and took off the label. Correct me if I'm wrong

As high as Cisco CompactFlash cards are marked up, I don't think they can beat the 2000% markup of that ethernet cable...

edit: I take it back... $1419.99 for a 256MB Compact Flash card...

Rock Band mics are the same thing where you can use any USB mics or has a USB hub. HDMI is the most notorious though.

This is nothing new, but I guess there in an ass for every seat. I loled when I saw the "world of warcraft" laptop pos they were selling for about 3X regular cost because of the WoW sticker on the front.

Yea, I'm surprised no one brought up Monster yet.

i was at Best Buy the other day and watched as the salesman convinced an old man that he "needed" a Monster HDMI cable for the LCD TV he was buying.

$130 for an HDMI

^ you should have strolled by and said to the guy, a $10 HDMI cable is the exact same as that without the fancy price I hate watching people get taken, and will often play the roll of spoiler

no one is making you buy the wii specific sd card, white GC controller, "wii keyboard" or for wii GC games.

Some people might pay more just because its white and says Wii.

I know a few people who paid extra for the black macbook.

So let's think about this just a little

Nintendo still has to buy the generic SD card, probably from Sandisk. So Sandisk gets their price. Nintendo's volume is small, so they don't get the same price as a bigger buyer.

Then the card gets customized white either by painting or by molding with a different color plastic, and it gets a Nintendo-specified label and packaging.

Then Nintendo needs to make their profit. I can see this customized part easily being double the price in the end.

sandisk sells them manufacture them everything they just have "wii" on them seing as how sandisc is not a small company its probably one of the few products like this with an actuall nintendo licence. nintedo even offically states you can use any sd card up to 2gb ( i wonder why that is? when reading up on a xbox360 hardrive home upgrade i found out the you can only put up to a 120 or what ever the biggest size MS makes for the xbox360)

I dont remember seeing stuff like this for the ps 2 or 3 maybe its becacuse of the vast number difference between people who bought gamecubes to people who have wiis now... now that i think about any anything gamecube compatable repackaged for the wii wouldnt be easily reconized by people who didnt have gamecubes.

Regardless of whether Sandisk licensed the Wii logo or Nintendo is using Sandisk as an OEM to manufacture Wii-branded SD cards, all of what I said is still true.

A customized, special-branded product will always cost significantly more.

More than likely, the Wii has an SD card reader built in, not an SDHC which supports High Capacity SD. I think typically, anything bigger than 2GB is SDHC.

Microsoft has a proprietary file format on the drive to force people to buy the Microsoft Hard Drive for the 360. People have already figured out a way to use your own 120GB HD. Chod did this in this thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=702291

PS3 lets you put any 2.5" SATA laptop drive, and it will automatically format it for use. I upgraded my PS3 from 20GB to 250GB.

The old iPod mini had a 4GB Microdrive in it. Apple customized the firmware so that it wouldn't work as a generic 4GB Microdrive.

It's a pretty common practice.

I once was a victim of high end cables, but the wool that was in front of my eyes has been removed, thankfully. I am happier and wealthier because of it. As it turns out one of the S2ki guys is an engineer for a high end audio company, so he reached out to say hello, I know the products he had worked on and actually owned a set of speakers we helped develop, small world. He was cautious about broaching the subject about cables but in plain english he asked me a question. "I have test equipment that can hear better then any human ear 100% of the time, this same equipment can not detect any difference with high end cables(other then slight changes in impedance and some have a little more loss then others) why do you think that is?" I struggled to be honest with myself, but it was all in my head, and he said bingo the high end audio biz is full of merchants peddling snake oil a premium prices and people buy it and justify it to themselves, audiophiles HATE being told this, but its the truth and I feel victim to it myself.

The ultimate sham is Transparent Audio Opus MM2
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-ente...air-303825.php I am sad to say I have a friend who has not one but TWO sets of these to bi-wire his speakers.
