PSP question

can the PSP play like divx encoded videos? like if I downloaded a movie from the internet and it's in divx/avi format, will the psp be able to play it, or does it have to be mpeg for me to play it? Thanks, wanna do some research if i do purchase it.

mp4 only, but it may play more things with firmware updates or hacked firmware in the future. There are tons of encoders for the psp already. I have a 2 gig duo and have quite a few aqua teen hunger force episodes, a few albums, and some law and order episodes along with 2 movies.

so it's easy to find the firmware updates to play avi/divx? or do you actually have the program to encode them? Thanks.

I have encoded a couple of XVID encoded vids to the psp.

The psp's screen does ghost a bit on some scenes..not all that bad, but it depends on how the video was encoded.

I use ffmpeg to convert direct from the vob. I use virtualDub/avisynth to import the video then find the crop settings for the video via the null filter. AFter getting those setttings, I use ffmpeg to convert to psp format.

The video comes out good. The bitrate I use to fit say an hour and 45 minute move under 512MB memory stick pro duo is about 512Kb/s bitrate. It's about 460MB file. The video is then scaled to fit the psp screen. I encode in 368x208 (PSP aspect ratio) format (for all 1.85:1 aspect ratio movie). I use 417x176 (for 2.35:1 aspect ratio movies).

You guys will be suprised, the quality is actually very good considering the low ass bitrate! However, I think the AVC encoding is restricted to only the UMD discs. Spiderman 2 look fantastic. It's unbelieveable...that movie is a total showcase for the psp's awesome widescreen.

I originally did not want to buy the PSP...but with all the extra features (music player, movies, and picture viewer), it sure beats out a $600 PDA...which is going extinct soon.

I know of a CAMERA/GPS/KEYBOARD attachment...even maybe a phone attachment would be cool. But yea, this unit eats up your wallet fast. I had to buy memory stick for it, and spend $ on game. DAyam, easy $450 dollars!

The firmware is being tested as we speak. It is not an official sony firmware, so i dont know if you'd want to flash your bios with home brewed firmware. And for the 2 gig duo, i work for a photgrapher and he picked it up for me in the city. Its a duo pro, fast read and write times and it plays movies, music, and can store game files and other things as well. Its pretty cool. As for the movie encoder, i am using 3gpp.

Yup, all you have to do is make a music folder in the PSP directory of the memory stick. it would look something like e:PSP/MUSIC, substitue E for your drive and make sure the MUSIC is all caps. You can also format the card, but if you have game saves just do it that way. It supports ATRAC and MP3.

if you format the memory stick w/ the PSP it'll automatically create all the folders you need for photos, music, games and savedata.

if you want to set up your memory stick for videos goto this website
http://psp.connect.com/

and if you want to convert videos into mp4 format use this program
