ps3 upgrades
i was reading that the 20gb can be upgraded to 60gb? How so? And since the 60gb have built in wifi what does that mean for the 20gb? Do you have to buy a wireless add-on similar to the 360?
Could not find much information on this....

i'm pretty sure the ps3 harddrive can be upgraded just like the folks that put the 500gb harddrives in their tivo's...
about the wireless...have you tried to get one of those usb wireless nic's and plug it into the ps3's usb port? It might work or it might not...
also i just got a system update, i think it was vers1.3...my ps3 now automatically selects 1080i instead of 720p

And, I have read about people putting 250gb drives in with no problems.

Sony updates PS3 firmware
Thursday 7-Dec-2006 2:03 PM
Latest firmware patch poking 720p-native displays with a stick of irritation
A new firmware patch released for PS3 - updating the system to version 1.30 - introduces new features to Sony's console - but apparently issues with resolution output remain.
It's been reported on Shacknews that the new update has resulted in scaling issues with displays - in particular with those with a native resolution of 720p but that support 1080i. Apparently, PS3 now favours 1080i output if both that and 720p are supported, meaning users with a display with a native 720p resolution have to go into the resolution menu and deselect 1080i support to avoid a scaled image.
A side effect of deselecting 1080i output is to do with the Blu-ray disc player which, as it doesn't support 720p output, will down-scale a Blu-ray movie to 480p. However, you can manually select 1080i output before whacking the movie disc in to avoid the down-scaling, but owners of displays that are 720p-native aren't likely to be too chuffed about all the fiddling around they have to do.
It's further reported that games that are 720p-only still down-scale to 480p on displays that only support 1080i.
On the positive side, the firmware update allows PS3 owners to put a tick against EVERY resolution their display supports rather than JUST the highest res supported - "The video will automatically be output at the maximum resolution suitable for the content being played. The highest resolution possible for the content within the range of resolutions selected under [Video Output Settings] is automatically selected for video output from the PS3 system. For system software version 1.30 and later, the video resolution is selected in order of priority as follows: 1080p > 1080i > 720p > 480p > Standard (NTSC)," explains Sony.
In addition, Sony has introduced a utility that lets you back-up data on PS3's hard drive to Memory Stick, SD Memory Card, CompactFlash, or USB flash drives, extra format options for the HDD and there's some stuff to do with the old Blu-ray drive remote. Plus, users "can select the video output format to use when outputting video content from a Blu-ray Disc using an HDMI cable. Adjust the settings as necessary for the TV in use."
Finally, below is the official bullet-pointed list of what's included in the update:
Settings
* You can now register the BD remote control in [Register Bluetooth Device] under [Accessory Settings].
* [BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)] has been added as an option under [BD/DVD Settings].
* [Backup Utility] has been added as a feature under [System Settings].
* You can now select the hard disk format method in [Format Utility] and [Restore PS3 System] under [System Settings].
* The method of selecting output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
Other
* The compatibility of USB devices with PlayStation2 format software titles has changed. For details on USB devices that can be used with system software version 1.30, select here.

problem is the software/drivers, i dont think the ps3 will have down loadable drivers for linksys....has anyone hooked up their 20gb with internet aside from direct connection? my computer is right near my video game setup, is there a way to link them?

i think that will work.
i think that will work.
I didn't read all of the posts, but If your computer is right next to your PS3, why not just put a switch between your computer and modem? This way you can be online on both of em. How far is the modem from your PS3?

If one of those stand alone access points doesn't work, then the only other thing I can think of is setting up an ADHOC network from your PC. Basically your computer acts as a "router" to your PS3. Not sure if that will work though. Google setting up adhoc network.
You have to go in and manually configure your subnet mask and gateway/IP address.. or you can pick up Linksys wireless B/G adaptor from bestbuy right now its on sale for 49.99 w/ free ground shipping.

fuhgeddaboutit
it wasn't working before
you got advice on how to fix it
it's working now
you're good to go!
Well the WAP stopped working shortly after, so i bought a 200ft ethernet cord, and hardwired it to the basement. Did a nice clean install also, right down the laundry shoot. Works alot better now anyways.

Just an FYI for anyone like me who has an HDTV but doesnt have a newer one with HDMI Ports.
The "AV Multi Out" on the back of the PS3 is totally pin compatible with the PS2.
I was able to re-use the Component Video breakout cable I had bought for my PS2 with my PS3 and enabled 1080i right afterwards with no issues.
Considering the PS3 only comes with Composite (Yellow/Red/White) cables out of the box, this was a big win for me to get HD working without having to go back to the store.
If anyone here finds that Sony or someone else releases an Infared Adapter for the PS3, please make sure to PM me. Seems like a big miss on Sony's part not to include a $4 peice of hardware that makes their unit compatible with millions of universal remotes out there.
I'm hoping they get smart and either start supporting normal PC USB to IR adapters or they make their own. I wouldnt mind giving up a USB Port to get IR Support for my Harmony.
