PC question, folder closes while viewing

Not really gaming but I think it's more appropriate here. When I click on My Computer and then go to My Documents ---> My Videos after about 2 or 3 seconds an error message will say:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
This is annoying as hell. I can't view my documents or anything. Could it be a virus? The strange this is, when I use a media player to view the folder with the videos, it doesn't bring up the error message. Scanned the folder with the latest version of Trend Micro PC-cillin and it doesn't detect anything. HELP!!!

No jokes about porn please.... all I have are educational videos for school and fansubs.

Another thing is, my laptop has a modest 80GB hard drive which is nearly full at this point. I put the files on an external hard drive, and when I view them on that hard drive, it also brings up the error.

create a new user and then copy and paste all your stuffs in your existing "My Document" to the new user's My Document and then login to the new user to see if that help.

If you are thinking if a virus is in your computer but the anti virus program can't find it, try opening the registry and check to see if there is any funny looking entries in this location:

Local Machine->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->CurrentVersion->Winlogon->Notify

If there are funny stuffs there, forget cleaning it. You need to format the hard disk and start from scratch.

You probably have "Sys Protect", "Vundo", etc. virus. They are impossible to remove.

explorer errors are tricky.. you can try a system restore or uninstall any toolbars or hotfixes you've applied if this just started.

also, you can use a 3rd party file viewer, like 'ExplorerXP'

It's a corrupt video. I bet you view everything in it in thumbnail view, so you can see a small picture of what it is, right?

What you need to do is change your default view to list or icon or whatever. Anything but thumbnail. That way you can browse to that folder without getting the error. Then, the tedious part.

Make a new folder, then change the view to thumbnail just in that folder. Move each video over one at a time. (Only videos, as pictures won't cause this error.)

Whichever video crashes explorer, there's your problem. After you reboot or whatever, you know which video to delete.

Happened to me a few times, and that's the process to take care of it.

Nope, XP Media Center. Updated Windows, to no avail. I did have a reminder to update though, just ignored it for a while.

I found the problem to be a nimocodec and some other codec pack I downloaded a while back to solve some video playback problems I had in Windows MP. Did a search on my system for those files, deleted both of them, and the problem was fixed.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Good You got it fixed, I had a similar problem, on Vista, it is due to Nero, and there is fixes out there and It can be caused by installing KLITE Codec Pack, but I guess you had a similar problem but difference OS
