Owned a PSP for about 2 hours...

Well, just as I decided NOT to buy a PSP today...I stopped at Target on the way home to get Doom # for Xbox to statiate my gaming need.

Well, those bastards just got their new shipment in...
Same deal now as everywhere, has a demo disc...no spiderman 2 movie.

So, I bought it, got it home. Went to the mall and got Untold Legends, since they said it was very Diablo like.

Powered it up...5 dead pixels. Ok lets keep playing with it give a chance. Put in the demo disc. Yes its cool. Yes movies looks great. Games look subpar, Untold legends looks kinda crappy. sound sucks and I hate using headphones with portable games unless on a plane. And there was one dead pixel in a very annoying place on the screen.

Basically, the device is very cool. But I will never put the money into it on top of the initial and expensive 250 plus tax. I'll never spring for the 1gb stick. I'll never really buy movies for it. Never put music on it.

And I was reminded of why I dont really own a PS2...Not much for the games on it. Specially whats available right now. So it lost its appeal

So, I still think its cool. And if I had disposable income to piss away I might have kept it. I returned it and got Doom 3 instead.

Thankfully, I didnt open the Untold Brotherhood game. I'll return that tomorrow.

got my PSP from Best Buy today. and - I was wrong - the Spiderman 2 UMD is not a $50 value, it's not $20, it's not $10. It's priceless - "for promotional use only - not for sale" ownz j00.

The demo disc has crappy MPG's of the games - they are not indicative of the actual experience - try out the actual games on the unit, then write back.

I got Twisted Metal (pretty damn sweet - Paris oooh la la) and of course I had to get Wipeout to try the web browser... trying to get that up and running.

I'd have probably kept it if I had the disposable income lying around but right now.

living alone with less money > having a roommate

think the hype will die down. i played with my friend's psp and kinda got bored after 20 minutes. i'll never watch a movie on it, never play music with it, never surf the net with it. i don't think it's worth the 250 that sony is charging. i would use it maybe during my train ride commute to and from work for 30 minute intervals. other than that i cannot sit there playing with a portable device for hours on end. its a very nice looking device but really not all that people make it appear to be.

I was taken in by the breathtaking screen really.

I wouldnt ever really use it for any of those things either. Plus, its $250 for the system. $50 per game. $20 per movie. $150 for a 1gb stick.....it all fucking adds up.

When all is said and done. I'd rather put that much cash into an xbox2 which will deliver more.

bingo.. does anyone really *NEED* a PSP? No. should anyone try to justify a *NEED* for a PSP? No.

and, PSP is not a substitute for Xbox 2... and vice versa. I mean, to me, you saying you'd rather have an Xbox 2, would be like saying, I like the PSP, but I'd rather have a new HT subwoofer. Different products for different applications. Both play games, but chances are, you're not gonna be sitting around at home playing PSP for too long, if you have a home gaming system around.

the fact is, the unit IS slick and fun to use. I will be the first to say if a product is overrated. This one was better than I thought it would be. And, I felt like $250 was a value for it - I got the movie, it came with a carrying case, headphones+remote, the damn thing has wi-fi built-in, plays movies, music, games, web, etc. etc. Try getting all that shit for FREE with an iPod, for example. A standard 20gb ipod. Yeah, you'll be set back $250. Of course the iPod has the 20gb hard drive. But all it does is play music.

The PSP is a slick powerhouse. There's no telling what they will develop for this thing. The possibilities are endless.

Anyway, it's interesting to hear different views on a product.

srika....i dont know if you really read my posts. but in almost all of them I said I would most likley have kept the PSP if money wasnt tight right now.

see, lets bring this back to what really matters money and who has enough to pis sit away. right now, i dont think i do. so id rather have it to put towards something i'll get more use out of.

But in the end for me it would be just another gadget. My sidekick II, while valuable when I was working on the road...is now just something i take to work so i dont have to log in to check email......meh. If i wasnt under contract I'd sell it.

PSP is great for people like my mom, who loves hers along with her DS. She likes the handheld systems.

Works better for her then me. I'll just play hers when I'm home for those rare visits.

I read your posts, I know what you are saying. My above post was not directed to you. Even the Xbox 2 comment, I know there are other people out there that think that way ("I like the PSP but I'd rather have an Xbox 2"). Sorry not singling you out.

Cool, cause you know, if I could afford both right now...I would ;P

I'm also debating about trying to get a new lens for the d100.........after my friends wedding (photo thread i made in ramblings) I've decided I need a good wide angle/normal zoom to compliment my 70-200. Looking at the DX series. doubt i can afford those either...

What I mean is, the one you get with the PSP is a promotional product - i.e. collector's item. It's really not a big deal at all, in the larger scope of things.

You know, sitting here at work, I CANNOT HELP but feel like playing the PSP.... I'm at a new job so I'm not doing it, but damn, I WANT TO PLAY IT!!! my Spider-sense tells me it was a good purchase.

Of course it's still "new" to me - but still - I haven't got bored of it in 20 minutes, etc.

It's also the way they designed it. The little device is just such a nice looking thing...

On the plane last week, everyone around me was asking about it when I whipped it out to play with. Definitely eye-pleasing. So, yeah. You can't get enough of it.

I just kinda get annoyed that I'm constantly cleaning the PSP tho...Such a giant magnet for dust and fingerprints/smears can be spotted for a mile.

I hear you on the cleaning issue - I think it's gonna be a challenge to keep clean.

I have one negative thing to say about the PSP - I wish the media were easier to handle, use, load. I think it's too hassling to switch a game - they should have made it easier to do. And I think the design of the UMD itself is lacking and could have been done better. I'm not complaining though.

Then I think you'll be in line for one in a year, when it drops $100 or, maybe you'll be in line for the Xbox-P I'm certain Microsoft is hard at work on a *coughripoffcough* portable unit.

I have not been this entertained with a portable since the NeoGeo Pocket...But, then again, I really have not given the Nintendo Gameboys enough of a chance either...

Certainly, the PSP game list is shoddy compared to the NeoGeo Pocket, but I'm happy with what I have so far and I think in time, the little device will stand the test of time...Besides, GT is coming for it!

This is funny because I was almost in the exact same situation yesterday. I'm in Boston for training. I got out of class early yesterday and went to the local mall to waste some time. They had a few PSP's in stock and I almost bought one. I actually had it in my hands, but then I realized it is basically a waste of money for me. I never owned a portable and I really don't have any need for one. The screen is cool, but none of the games interest me and I don't have a need for a portable movie/music player.

It's a cool system, but not for me. I know if I got it, in a week it would be collecting dust in a drawer.

I think it will be cool to play the games against other PSP's, online, etc. Also, I am looking forward to GT4 Mobile (shocking right), and also anxious to see the ways they expand the productivity and applications. I heard they are working on a video out option, for instance. Would be cool to use it as a portable movie player or gaming unit. I would also like to see external controller options, and other expansion features. The PSP is still in its infancy, and has much to learn.

Very cool, although I'm not sure GT is the type of game I'd really enjoy too much on a handheld.. I'd prefer to play GT with a steering wheel, in a comfortable location with a big TV and a nice surround sound system. Handhelds seem better geared towards good arcade racers like Project Gotam Racing, Midnight Clut 3 and the like.

Although the GT developers are outstanding and I'm sure the game will be great nonetheless... If any game could get me to buy a PSP, it would be the GT series.

valid points... indeed, the biggest concern I have about GT4 Mobile is the control... for instance I think I would be using AT... we will have to see. An external controller would help.

But damn isn't it amazing how far portable gaming devices have gone. I still have 2 old portable units, basketball and football - the ones where each object on the screen is represented by a red horizontal LED line - you know the ones - hell I think they would still turn on if I put a 9V in em...
