Optical audio cable for 360 worth it?
Optical audio cable for 360 worth it?
I blew out the speakers on my TV which finally gave me the excuse to get the surround sound system I've always wanted.
Is the difference in sound worth it if I hook up the 360 with the optical cable? Right now I've got all my game systems hooked up through the regular red/white stereo RCA-type cables.
What setting should I have the surround on for the other consoles? I think the receiver has the option of Dolby Pro Logic or Pro Logic II.
Any advice appreciated. I'm a big noob when it comes to the audio systems. TIA.

yes, it did for me... also check out www.l-com.com for good prices on quality cables... i got my optical cables on there for around 15 bucks... Circuit City and Best Buy wanted around 40 the last time i checked...
Cool.
I noticed my PS2 has an optical out as well. Is there any type of splitter or something where I can hook up both the PS2 and 360 with the optical into the one input I have on my receiver?

yes I think it was very worth it to use teh optical cable. I got a few good ones from monoprice.com I think it was.
there is also a "splitter" thing that has a knob that you turn to point to three inputs so you can choose which one you want.

I may have to check and see if my old receiver has an optical input. How far back does the optical input go? The receiver I have is at least 10 years old, and I am pretty sure it doesn't have an optical input.
I forgot to check last night! Gotta remember to check though tonight, but I got all my other cables in yesterday from monoprice. Got my old computer hooked up to my plasma and it looks very nice
Yep, I'll say its definitely worth it. Nothing like playing HD games in surround sound.
I just wish I had realized that my HD kit for the regular XBOX also had an output for optical sound. I didn't realize it did until AFTER I got my 360 last year and was researching the internet to see if there was anyway I could have surround sound with my XBOX as well. I felt so stupid when I saw that I had that capability the entire time!
I had a manual splitter too, but I finally got this instead. now everything is done with my Harmony remote. It has 7 total inputs with 4 or 5 of them also having optical ports. This is a great buy!

the difference for me was like night and day... games like Rainbow Six-Vegas and Ghost Recon sound like the bullets are hitting objects behind and off to the side or behind AND off to the side (I have 7.1
) Games like Bioshock is even creepier with surround sound... like wise for watching scary movies.
