playing in pure darkness with the sound blasting on 5.1 surround= pooped pants.
i could barely beat re4, i had to turn on the lights and turn down the sound a few times
but left 4 dead was pretty damn freaky when i first played it, fatal frame scared the poop out of me, the grudge for wii is really damn scary in the first mention atmosphere.

I have Dead Space and have not yet ripped it out from its packaging. But, from what I read, it's a gem...
To be honest, most of the games listed above have not really freaked me out. I will however throw in my vote for scariest game ever: Aliens vs. Predator (PC game released in 1999). Play it on the human campaign with the soundtrack...

Dead Space was pretty scary for me too, but when you're playing it at 2am with a bunch of friends screaming.. that doesn't help
The RE games are alright for a couple of little scares here and there...but, honestly, nothing that makes you break into cold sweat.
AvP was just absolutely intense fear. Nothing like getting thrown into a map where the lighting has almost gone (with the exception of an emergency strobe light off in the distance) and just you, the poor Marine, with his machine gun and your portable wrist motion detector (from 1986's movie, Aliens).
You'll be happily marching along and the eerie music stops...and your motion detector starts to beep because something is near and yet, you can't see it.
I fawking hated the facehuggers...and more than anything, did I wish to trade my weaponry in for some lighting.

Fuck that game....
I think the difference in AvP is that facehuggers are instant death. And the Xenomorphs are freaking fast. You don't really hear them...and they don't kinda stumble around after you...
They sprint.
And the orchestral score for AvP also was superbly done for the game. I know it's a really old game...but, if you can find a copy, I urge you to try it out. Play it on the Marine campaign. You can use the other 2 races too, but their campaigns are more evil fun as you're the stalker/hunter.

Yeah Silent Hill (the first one) and Dead Space are cool. It's awesome when you have all the lights turned out, only the glow of the TV, and you have the volume cranked.
Good stuff, imo.
Resident Evil games are mostly scary just because of moments where zombies bust out or jump out suddenly, makes your heart skip a couple beats. Kind of cheap scares, imo. However when I played Resident Evil 4 way back when, I'd get scared shitless when that villager with the sack over his head came up and decapitated you with the chainsaw. The scream he made + what he was doing...
Anyone ever play Eternal Darkness for Gamecube? That game had its moments. The sanity effects were pretty lame at times, though. However I swear to god I'm still afraid to go in the master bathroom in the mansion...

eternal darkness' famed "Bathroom scene" is one of the scarriest game moments of all time

Me neither / thread lol
I'm still stuck in the level just before you go to hell
I'll add Silent Hill 2 when you faceoff with the Pyramid head dude...
Each time he showed up, I felt my skin crawl
Dude I beat the game with the Predator & the Alien mode but the Human...hell nawh
I tried it but didn't last a few mins.
I like to play on the hardest setting so I can punish myself for some reason. But that game is one for the history books as the scariest game in a decade...I wonder what it would be like trying to play it now
(haven't touched it in years lol)

Silent Hill for sure. At my grandfathers house which was creepy enough with no light. The static radio going nuts when someone would creep on you.
RE2 used to freak me out when the tall zombie guy would just bust through walls popping out of nowhere.

Well, playing the game as the Predator or Alien is kinda "easy"...because well, you're pretty much the hunter.
As a Marine...well, yeah...you were the prey. I still
at the "free underwear" offer the game came with because they were so sure you'd
your pants...And yeah...hands down THE scariest game I've ever played (over Doom 3, Resident Evil games, Silent Hill, F.E.A.R., etc. etc.). Nothing comes close to the mood, tension, and just downright dread you get playing as a Marine...
i remember playing Gears of war on my brothers big screen the first time it came out....i shatted my self haha seriously, 5.1 surroudn on a 1080i/p screen. hahaha, we were buzzed it was after a new years party, and it was teh first tiem i drank red bull, i drank 6 cans straight hahah
they said, i was running around in circles and they made a stupid joke because my character was facing a wall, adn they were like just because i dont see the enemy doesnt mean they dotn see me hahhaha
