Nvidia DLSS & RTX News and Discussion Thread

DLSS has been around for a while and has had a big impact on the gaming industry, basically all games support it now.

Nvidia announced DLSS 5 today and it's pretty insane. It is using Neural rendering and path tracing to make games look realistic.

People are pissed because about half of the examples they show it makes the character look yassified or that they have an IG filter on their face to make them look pretty. Mostly the Resident Evil girl in their first example, and what's in the thumbnails. I get it, for. a few frames the demo looked like a mediocre AI slop video. The skin looked IDK how to describe it but it looks like an AI generated video from 1-2 years ago when it was more obvious that a video was AI.

Starfield was probably the best looking example but it wasn't perfect. The demos they showed in both of those videos was hyperrealistic, even the landscape shots the before shots the scene has more artistic style like a warmer color temperature of like 3000kand then DLSS 5 gives more accurate realistic lighting and changes the color temp to 4500k.

Supposedly the game creators will be able to tweak all those settings and even tell it not to run on parts of the game.

Nvidia is doing this using new tech called Neural rendering where they replace some game assets with an AI generated textures, and lighting, and shadows, and hair, and skin. Some of them looked a little too AI. Theorectically neural rendering can do other things besides make everything look as real as possible and it could make it look however the developer wanted cell shaded, Anime cartoon style, whatever they want, just in the demo they only showed example that made everything look real and removed coloring. Nvidia says you can use neural rendering even in minecraft but didn't show that in action.

Another complaint is that it took two 5090s to run the demo, one to run the real game renderer, and another to run DLSS 5. Which doens't bode well for performance even though nvidia says it will run on one GPU like normai once the real version is released. It's doesn't seem it will boost frame rate like previous versions of DLSS do over native rendering. Maybe they released this demo too early, the end result didn't look great in all scenarios, the demo focused on hyper realism which some didn't like and the tech was very unoptimized.

I think it's cool tech, it's where the industry is headed, neural rendering is coming in a future version of DirectX so AMD and Intel are going to have to support it as well.

Oblivion remastered is going to get it as an update so I'm kinda excited to pick up that game again and try it out when it launches supposedly fall but wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed after this.

maybe this is why are releasing and updated version of frame generation that can do up to 6x frame gen. Seems like you need 6x frame gen to run DLSS 5 at 60FPS on a 5090 LOL

So yeah it's looking more and more like just and AI filter added to every frame.

Daniel Owen makes great videos, he gets further explanation from an nvidia employee
