Nintendo: Wii Successor News and Discussion Thread
From IGN...
According to multiple reports today, Nintendo will reveal a new console at E3 this coming June.
Game Informer first reported the details, saying the console is capable of running games at "HD resolutions." Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo's intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.
Nintendo is reportedly showing the console to publishers to garner interest for a late 2012 launch.
Additional sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3 and that the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software.
A report from CVG states the new Nintendo console will use an all-new controller - not an updated Wii controller - with sources saying it will have a built-in screen. Additional sources informed IGN the screen has touch capability.

well all the other companies always take what people like about the nintendo consoles to add to thier own. been doing it since the original... its about time nintendo did the same thing. but i wonder if this new console will also play gamecube games.
I hope it has some kind of upconversion tech to make the less pretty games look better on the new console. That shouldnt be to hard to fit in...
but when it comes to graphics people tend to forget that the programers of the game have more to do with how the game looks then the console its on. I have gamecube games with better graphics then some 360/wii games
I wonder if they will make two versions of the upcomming Zelda:Skyward Sword like they did TP which was made around the launch of the wii. and for those that dont know it not a simple port they mirrored the entire game on the wii console to make link right handed (his creator is a lefty and so is link traditionally) the map and all the dungons are backwards to...

let's not get carried away now...
I really will be rooting for the old dogs here.. but from the info, it sounds like they are releasing a console that should have been out several years ago.
they need to stop catching up and start setting the bar again. having fun games isn't enough anymore, they need to be aesthetically pleasing as well..

1. They are family oriented and as such they tend to produce consoles that are within easy grasp of an average family income.
2. They also tend to make their hardware and sell it AT A PROFIT Even though the NGC was not a popular system, it still made them a profit on the hardware side.
3. MS and Sony WISH that every single first party game they released sold like hotcakes......Mario on Wii? each release sells 20+ million copies Wii resort? sane thing, Zelda? same
4. Nintendo's games ARE asthetically pleasing for their intended audience........
and what part of them making them more visually pleasing would hurt that trend?
they would still sell a bazillion copies of every game to the same audience, and more...
seems pretty obvious to me why people want this...
and "what nintendo is all about" is not what it once was.. what people are calling for is for them to once again start pushing the envelope on technology.. not just sales..
and I don't really see nintendo's (target audience) having a problem with any of this...

have you seen the resident evil remake? or re4, killer 7? thoese are some beutiful games just to name a few (i didnt realize till i typed it but all these games were made by capcom)
but on the subject of grahics what do you consider good? some people judge graphics on resolution and clearity alone some people look at from a more artistic perspective. i lean more to the artistic design but clearity is always nice.
but i would be willing to bet money that the new sytem has got some untold features. nintendo always gotta have something im sure the touchscreen controler has something to do with it originally the wii was to have a touch screen only for a controler that way game makers could have as many or as little "buttons" as they wanted in a game i just hope the system has lots of storage space or even better allow you to hook up a usb storage device to it. 1tb
also allow you to "install" games like on 360 to improve load times
or maby they will shock everyone by having HD-CARTRIDGES!!!!!

pretty basic... resolution, sharpness, contrast, FPS.
i understand your view on it, but originally, it sounded like you were saying these games on the cube were more advanced visually than new gen consoles... thats the part that had me
and like mentioned, i really do hope its more than its being leaked to be... i would love to own a Nintendo console that has both, great classic franchise games but also includes new age technology (graphics-wise)
i am an old school nintendo buff (still have my NES,SNES,and64 still plugged to our living room TV). and what i dont want, is a new, $400 console that plays games that look twice as good as games that were released 15 years ago.
im ready for nintendo to really start throwing some punches at MS and Sony.
when everybody competes... everybody wins.. plain and simple.

Meh @ this. The Nintendo Wii was supposed to be a new "revolution" (sorry for the pun) that was supposed to change the way ALL games were played. I still remember back in the day when the console's idea was first pitched, developers from all over were jumping on the idea, saying they were way into it, that they couldn't wait for it, that they were brainstorming ways to utilize the technology, etc.
However it seems like at the end of the day it was just poorly executed (mostly on the 3rd party developer side) and some games were essentially light gun games, in a way... and IMO the "hardcore" gamers for the most part, got into gaming from the Playstation or PS2, so to them the controller with 16 buttons isn't a tired old idea.
As a matter of fact, I think if they want to target hardcore gamers, they need to bolster their 3rd party support up to where it overshadows Nintendo. As much as I love all of Nintendo's games, I think hardcore gamers are more interested in what Capcom, Konami, etc. etc. have to offer. What I'm trying to say is that it'd be next to impossible to entice the same people who buy Call of Duty or Gears of War, into buying a Mario or Zelda game.
Meh, just wanted to say it...

it's pretty clear what people want and the fact that MS is selling Kinect like hotcakes backs that up....they want interactive games
btw, why are you not complaining about the simplicity of the Kinect games graphics wise?? they are extremely simple compared to the non Kinect counterparts.......
PS3 move is DOA imho.....no one wants to hold a colored lightbulb......
they both tried to improve on it.
MS went a different direction with the motion sensor technology, but IMO we still aren't ready to give up joysticks triggers and buttons. the kibect has a ways to go.
SONY straight copied nintendo and it was a pathetic attempt to combat MS's new addition.. although right now neither looks like it will stand the test of time.
nintendo had a great idea with the wii, and many people enjoy it, but the overall population isn't ready for the standard of gaming to be motion controlled.
and it's obvious the kinect's selection of games are not advanced visually yet, it's still in it's infancy.
but it's clearly on the way with it making it's big game debut in forza 4.
we will see how it goes.
also, the theory that 90 million+ wii's were sold, therefor nobody but an elite few wants change is a bad view on things.
those same people bought all of the 3 different DS consoles that offered nothing more than size, color, and non-game related updates.
nintendo could sell the 64 if they re-released it, sales are not the point.

no, you will not find a game with less than 720.
halo can run anything from 720p-1080i-1080p
each game displays it's output on the rear of the box.
whether or not they are upscaled is a different story, but not 360/ps3 game displays less than 720.

straight from Bunge (the guys that actually made the game)
scaling an image to 720p != to running at 720p....
"Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers - both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see - lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible - so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image. This ability to display a full range of HDR ... gives our scenes ... a steady and smooth frame rate, which in the end was far more important to us than the ability to display a few extra pixels."
Not even 720p......lawl

well any of the COD Modern Warfare games are the same, sub 720p resolution on the PS3 and 360. Neithe graphics processor has the ability to run any moderately graphics intensive game at any hd resolution....it's ALL scaled. Only games that run at 1080p are ones that are relatively simple gfx wise
i already knew that most of those games dont even run anywhere close to 1080p or even 720p.
we are talking about hardware from around 2005 or so.
back then i dont think the high end GPUs in a desktop PC could run 1920x1080 resolution w/o turning down the effects and slower FPS.

say what? PC hardware at the time of 360 release absolutely destroyed the GPU in the 360/ps3 it was not even close
I seriously doubt that the 360 can run quake 4 at 1600*1200 at over 100fps with 4x aa and 16x ansio like the X1800XT or 7800GTX could...........on a dual core system running a full blown OS and a ton of other crap at the same time.
Quake Wars runs at 720p on the 360
1600*1200 = approximately 1.9mp
1920*1080 = approximately 2.1mp

Hrmmm yea you're right. I forgot i got my core 2 duo system w/ X1950XT in 2006, the same year as the ps3.

For some reason I was mixing it up with my previous card a 9600pro
It's a good concept, just not executed so well. The Nintendo DS on the other hand....
Controls on the wii in most cases/make break the game. take ssx blur now when i first popped it in my console i was sadded that they game the characters an "anime make over" i love anime but after 3 games why change? but the reason i dislike the game is the controls its HORRIBLE moving around is great but performing tricks is stupid and completly UNREALTED to the motion of the tricks you perform.
take Dragon Ball Z BT3 and that is one game that is third party with PERFECT controls. Special moves are fun as hell for a dbz fan mimicing the moves that they do to perform them. but haveing the resposiveness for light movement AND classic/Gamecube controler option for a more traditional fighting game feel.
Manhunt 2 had great controls espcilally the stealth kills using the wii remote making circle motions to wrap a chord around someones neck then use mote and chuck pulling back and shake to choke the shit out them is priceless. not that i like manhunt 2 as i dont play mandatory stealth games all to well...
as far as controls for me the best was game cube as it was the only controler that didnt take that "getting used to" period that i need with most controlers.
