Microsoft: Xbox 360 news

i kinda of have the opposite idea. refurbished means that it prob crapped out once and its been 'fixed' so it'll work for a while before crapping out again. i would say to save yourself the trouble and just get a new XBox but there's a good chance it'll give you the red rings of death; new, used or refurbished

That's ridiculous.
I've had the first and only 360 that I've ever had for 3 years now, and it's never had a single hiccup.

^Well, you are one of the few lucky owners to not have problems. ALL of my friends have had some sort of RROD problem. All except one of my buddies who also has a "factory freak" or something. I'm now on my second one which I purchased about two months ago and is threatening to crap out by occasionally flashing rings.
We'll see how the new "problem-free" Xboxs fair.
To the OP: I recommend you buy a new Xbox and make sure to get a protection plan offered in-store.

Sure will. Over 2 years old, no problems AT ALL.
Refurbished xbox 360 over a new one? I'd be nervous with a NEW ONE. If new ones are STILL crapping out, what makes you think refurbished ones are getting more attention? They aint getting shit.

that depends what kind of car racing you want. if u want the real deal then i would hold out for gran turismo5. its basically a driving simulator, not your average arcade-ish racing game. i heard its coming out in late 09(only on PS3)

I had no problem for over 2.5 years until you guys jinxed me with this thread. I got the red ring of death the other night. I just shipped it out this morning, they said to expect 2-3 weeks for the replacement...

I had no problem with the RRoD. Refurbished console, lasted 1.5 years until this afternoon, it died the day after I read this thread.

I would take the thing apart before I even played it. I'd want to know exactly what they did. I'd also want to know what the motherboard looked like. By the time my original died, the board looked like a piece of toast.
On the same note, I just bought a used wireless card from gamestop and it was broken upon installation, so dont be surprised. My sister in law works there, so she pulled some strings and got me a brand new one for no additional cost. She said most things don't get tested what so ever. Just return it ASAP if it breaks.

Microsoft cuts price on Xbox 360 Elite by $100
The tech giant slashes the cost of its high-end gaming machine days after Sony cut the cost of rival PlayStation 3.
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp. is slashing the price of its high-end Xbox 360 model by $100, ratcheting up the stakes in the game console fight this holiday season.
Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) will drop the price of the Xbox 360 Elite to $299.99, it said Thursday, just days after Sony cut the rival PlayStation 3 to $299.
The price on the entry-level Xbox Arcade model will stay at $199.99, and Microsoft will phase out its mid-range Pro console, leaving it with two models. The Pro will sell for $249.99 until supplies run out. The global price cut is effective Friday.
The Xbox is the No. 2 console in the U.S., behind Nintendo's Wii, which sells for $249. But Xbox sales have showed strength this year, up 17% in the U.S., the only console in positive territory.
Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said the price cut has been in the works for some time, and was not a response to Sony's move, which was announced last week at the Gamescom video game trade show in Cologne, Germany.
Rather, he said the company hoped the price reduction would attract new buyers and help simplify its product mix for manufacturers and retailers as well as customers.
"It really makes the decision for consumers a lot easier," he said. "They're either price conscious and they gravitate towards the Arcade or they the want the full Xbox 360 experience."
Game publishers such as Activision Blizzard have been clamoring for console price cuts, which help boost sales of software by increasing the installed based.
They are now getting their wish, even as the industry remains mired in a months-long slump brought on by a lack of big-name releases and a recession that has pinched consumer spending.

Want an Xbox 360 but don't care about playing online or taking part in any of the Xbox Live services? Then this is your lucky day.
Thanks to a recent decision by Microsoft to ban as many as a million players from Xbox Live for illegally modifying their consoles to run pirated games, there is now an absolute glut of "modded" Xboxes for sale on Craigslist.
And while a brand-new Xbox Arcade--the lowest-price version of the console--sells for $200 with no free games, it is now possible to spend as little as $100 for a used, modded, Xbox that comes with a slew of hit titles. You just have to be willing to give up using Xbox Live and be okay with your new game collection including mainly pirated titles.
Running a search for "modded Xbox" on Craigslist's Bay Area site returned 35 listings from the past three days. A similar search on New York Craigslist resulted in 87 listings. And dozens and dozens more are for sale on other local Craigslist sites.
One listing promised a "banned/modded" Xbox 360 with a 20 gigabyte hard drive, 13 games including Madden 2010, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, NBA 2K10, and others, and 20 HD movies.
"Everything works perfectly," the ad reads. "The 360 was treated better than I treat most people."
The ad also reminded potential buyers that, "since the console is banned, you will not be able to connect to the Xbox Live service. Therefore, this posting is for those of you who don't care if you can play online or not."
One Craigslist poster named Danny Cuccovia, a 22-year-old student from West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., was actually looking to buy a modded Xbox 360, and despite the incredible deals available right now, wasn't interested in one that couldn't get him onto Xbox Live.
A gamer looking to potentially go pro, Cuccovia suggested that modded Xboxes are great because there is no end to the supply of pirated games and that sellers of those games put very realistic-looking labels on them.
He also said he was sure that many of the people selling their banned Xboxes on Craigslist were doing so because they want to get a new one.
That was certainly the case with Kevin, a 29-year-old from Manhattan's East Village who logged into Xbox Live a few days ago only to discover the bad news about his console.
"I logged in, tried to play a game online, and it said I had been banned from the service for violating the terms of service," Kevin, who wouldn't give his last name, said. "I cursed, put my controller down, cursed Microsoft, and then bought another Xbox."
But even though he bought another used console that was advertised as being unmodified, Kevin said that when he tried to log on to Xbox Live, he quickly discovered he'd been cheated: the new device had been banned too. So on Tuesday, he bought another one.
"If you're interested in a modded Xbox," he said, "I've got one for you."

Damn, good thing I didn't get mine flashed. Are the reflashed DVD drives really undetectable or did they ban those too?
I guess it would be worth it to pick up a 2nd one if you played a lot of single player games only, but I play online mostly so meh
