These are the steps im taking:

Scan
X Enter
Right
WEP
Type in WEP
Address Settings Easy
IP Address Settings Automatic
DHCP Do not Set
DNS Automatic
MTU Automatic
Proxy Do Not Use
UPnP Enable
Save Settings
Test Connection
Fail at obtaining IP Address

Just hard code it. Try 192.168.1.2 or 1.102.
How many other devices are using the router?

no hard code the IP just use a higher range than devices. So if its a 192.168.1.100 network give it a 192.168.1.105 address with a gateway of 192.168.1.100. That way whenever the laptops or pc's connect it will usually issue a 1.101 or 1.102 or 1.103 but you should be good with 1.105

so by original IP and the new gateway should be the same and the new IP should be 5 more?

well first you need to find out what address range the netgear uses (i used 192.168.1.100 as an example) It could be 192.168.0.1 or 1.1. Once you know the range then you can add 5 to the gateways address.

** This is assuming that everything is stock except the password. If the router has MAC exclusions or any other type of custom setup then this wont work.

You can use a public DNS address. For my 360 I just use 4.2.2.2 But your ISP might have a list of recommended DNS address'

How old is your router? I was having the same problem with my old linksys and then I swapped it out with a newer one. That worked but then I got an all in one combo DSL modem/router. Works like a charm!
