Hacked Wii for Homebrew?

Anyone here downloaded that Wii hack to install the Homebrew channel?

I was bored today and looked through a couple online tutorials on how to do it, and it's very simple if you're technically apt - just need an SD card. I'm not recommending this in anyway, as it can brick your entire wii if you fuck it up, but it's pretty cool!

You can run all of the apps straight off the SD card.. I put about 1000 SNES roms and 1000 Genesis roms on there today and it's a lot of fun. I'm looking through some of the other apps now and was wondering if anyone else has done this and has recommendations.. anyone?

It's not nearly as robust as other console hacks, but definitely a great add on for the wii. You can make it play DVDs now too

Nope! There's a more recent hack called Bannerbomb that crashes the wii menu - don't need to buy anything.

If you're interested I could send you a few links, it's really easy. I did end up downloading a bunch of shady torrents trying to find good rom packs though

Do you still need a mod chip to play copied Wii disks?

The wii key. I know that it was really simple to mod the first set of wii's that had a certain s/n. But last i heard was that the 2nd set of wii's were really hard to mod. I am able to play burnt games and watch dvd's from the wii. But with all the firmware updates i actually bricked it once and was fortunate enough to unlock that firmware. Now i dont even play the wii.

I'm not sure yet, but I'll I should know once I start messing around with it. I think this soft mod is supposed to do everything the chip would enable... I do know that you can back up games directly to the SD card and play them off of there, which is essentially burning the game to your Wii. I believe that you potentially host the games on your pc or some other storage device on your Network and the Wii can access them from there... I'll look into it and see what's possible.

As far as the newer Wii's - I downloaded the latest firmware update before I hacked it so that the Wii would read a larger SD Card. The older menu version will only read < 2gb or something..

The update fixed the Zelda hack, but his should work anyway.. though it doesn't work on some Wii's, depending on the serial number. So, it definitely works for the latest firmware, but not necessarily all of the Wii's out there. After that, you definitely don't want to update though Nintendo at risk of bricking your Wii.

Alrite... So my brother and I have hacked our Wii... (well mostly him..)

This is what we can do with it: Play dvd's, play burned games, snes/n64/etc roms, using an external 120gb harddrive... (and I'm sure I'm forgetting some of the bigger things)

And no need for a chip of any kind. All software (he did it through the zelda game...)

Make sure you guys install bootmii to boot2 if you can. And get a flashdump of your Wii just in case of a brick.

Well I almost have it working perfect.

I thought I had a problem but it turns out the Wii didn't like the external drive I was using. I put a WD external drive on there and the Wii can use it.

For some reason USB Loader GX is not working but NeoGamma does. I still need to fool around with it some more.

Not bad.

Thought I'd comment on this since I did this two weeks ago. Like many, I was cautious since modding the Wii viods the Nintendo warranty. That said, there is a process to backup the console after the Homebrew channels is installed. I did that and had to restore from the backup - that worked well and I was able to complete the rest of the mod.

This is one of the best mods to come along in a long time.

Forgot about this - I originally had a Maxtor USB drive. The Wii didn't like that one. Purchased a WD Passport - works like a champ.

NeoGamma seems to work better in general in my experience.

The big problem with this is that it is a never ending battle. It takes forever for some of the Nintendo games to get hacked. Sports Resort took months. NSMB took a while, too.

I had mine pretty jacked up for a while--took me hours to get it right again. I was pretty close to giving up and just buying a used one off of ebay. I have way more in accessories than the cost of the wii itself (cables, controllers, hard drive, charger, etc.).
